6 Things I Will Teach My Children About God

No one is a perfect parent, but one thing that parents can do to help them be a better example is teaching their children about Jesus, God and the entire Christian faith. You do not have to be an expert to help your children begin their own faith journey. Laying down a solid foundation of Christian morals and values will help your children as toddlers through their adult years.

Religion can be a scary thought for a little kid, so teaching them that it’s okay to have doubts, for example, will give them the courage to ask questions and learn more about faith. Your children will be faced with a lot of differing opinions about the Lord, so it’s important to tell them what you, as a parent, want them to take away from Christianity.

Here are six things that are important to teach your children about God, and will help them start their own relationship with Christ.

God will always welcome you home.

As your child grows older, they may start to have doubts that are bigger and more prominent. This is okay too, as teens have to make a relationship with the Lord on their own. As a parent, it might be scary to see your child steer away from Christ so it is important to teach them early that God will always welcome them back home. God’s love will always have vacancy and has an open door policy with all of His children. Teach your children that no matter the mistakes they make or the failures that haunt them are forgiven because of the grace of Jesus. God will forgive them for their mistakes, and they are always welcome to talk with God no matter how long it’s been.

God is perfect, but His followers are not.

It’s important that kids are taught that God is perfect, however His followers never will be. All of God’s children, even pastors and dedicated Christians, will make mistakes and have contradicting actions. For example, a church leader might display anger towards someone else that is unwarranted. Children can turn this into resentment towards the Lord, instead of directing the frustrations on the real problem: His followers' downfalls. Children can get confused easily with this. However, they can learn how to separate their frustrations towards Christians from that of the Lord, and learn that it’s okay to be human and imperfect because of the sacrifice our Savior made for us.

God works in His ways, not ours.

Kids have to understand that God isn’t always going to answer our prayers in the way we think He should, and there is good reason behind that. Just like any loving parent, God seeks out what is best for His children and will constantly contradict our expectations for our own benefit. God knows what is best and His ways will always be grander than our own. Faith is trusting God even when things don’t make sense, and that includes a prayer that we feel may be unanswered or at the wrong time. I want my kids to understand that God works in His perfect timing and not ours. It's also important to let your children know that it's okay to be frustrated with God's timing. His plan will always work out the way it is supposed to.

God has a set of moral values for us.

Children will learn quickly that the Christian faith is full of important values, such as honoring your family, respecting honesty and celebrating everyone for who they are. Many of these values will be taught to your child as they grow up, and it is important to set the groundwork for their morals early. They’re relationship with God, ideas of what is important in life, and the like will be tested on a regular basis. Kids will be faced with those who disagree with the Christian faith, and they will be tempted to act on poor impulses. Teaching your children the strong values early will help them when they are faced with tough situations. Keep an open line of communication with your child so that they feel comfortable talking to you about the negative situations they face.
