children

You may be wondering what it means to teach your child to listen and follow his or her Internal Guidance System. It means teaching him to trust his first impulse toward an action that makes him feel “this is the right thing for me to do.”

When your child is in alignment and feels good, his impulses or “gut feelings” come from the Universe and are, therefore, for his highest good.

When a child is not in alignment, impulses come from his own reactive state and not from the Universe.

Any actions taken based on reactive impulses will not result in getting him what he wants.

Children act instinctively and choose actions and behaviors that serve their highest good, but they also react to their environment and impulses that arise from anger. This is considered “non-alignment,” and does not serve their highest good.

When a child acts out of anger, it is a good time for you to teach him the difference between acting from a place of alignment and connectedness to his highest self, that place of feeling good, or choosing behaviors that come from his feeling bad. Many of us grew up hearing the phrase “Think before you act.” In terms of the Universal Law of Attraction it is more appropriate to teach our children “Feel before you act.”

So, let’s say your son hits your daughter. What are going to say to teach your son about actions and alignment? Perhaps your discussion goes like this:

Parent: Do you know why you hit your sister?

Son: She grabbed my crayons and made me mad.

Parent: How did your sister react when you hit her?

Son: She hit me back.

Parent: Did you get your crayons back?

Son: No

Parent: The next time your sister does something you don’t like, try to think about what you really want to happen. This time, you really wanted your crayons. You already figured out today that getting mad only makes your sister mad and doesn’t get your crayons back. Think about your heart and what would make your heart feel better. All of your answers are in your heart. When we draw pictures of hearts with your crayons, what does the picture mean?

Son: Love

Parent: Yes, love. I would like you to think about how love can get what you want from your sister. Maybe that means asking her nicely. Or, perhaps you can find other crayons. The best way to get what you want is by not getting mad.

Your role as a parent is coaching and mentoring your child -- helping them to understand what motivates them to act. You help them learn how to use their IGS as the place from which they make decisions to act rather than letting life’s circumstances or reactions to the environment control their decisions.
