When it's time to send kids back to school, there is often a mix of emotions.
You may feel joy and excitement for your child, especially if they are eager to get back to their friends and school activities. However, you may also feel worried, anxious, or even fearful. While school provides many great opportunities for your child to learn and grow socially, it also means your kids aren't in your care.
If you're experiencing feelings of fear and uncertainty, remember the power of prayer. It's one of the most powerful ways you can entrust children to God's care.
As the school year begins, consider these five prayer topics — use them weekly or even daily to reduce worry and to support your child as they progress through the school year.
1. Protection From Harm and Danger
When safeguarding your child from harm, you want to focus on both physical and emotional considerations. Prayers that involve God's protection and guidance in making good decisions can make you feel more at ease.
As Psalm 91:11 says, "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."
Focus on prayers that target your greatest concerns, reading them aloud to your children or praying privately. Use this Bible verse to create your own prayer, asking God to keep children safe while at school:
“The LORD watches over you — the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life“ (Psalm 121:5-8).
2. Peace and Calm in Moments of Anxiety
God's word can help you ease feelings of anxiety. Use prayer to calm your mind and minimize everyday worry. As shared in Matthew 6:34, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Say a prayer when your child leaves for school, focusing only on today and the joy you'll feel when they return home.
Heavenly Father, we ask that you keep our children safe as they go to and from school, walk the halls, and participate in all school activities. As we wait for our children to return home, please give us peace and calm our anxious hearts, confident that you are our Savior and Protector. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
3. Wisdom, Focus, And a Love For Learning
Getting your child to learn scripture is important for students; it serves as a source of comfort, confidence, and encouragement. During challenging times, your child can lean on prayer to guide them. When they return home, you can recite a prayer together.
For wisdom and learning, lean on Proverbs 2:6, "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."
Here is an example prayer that you can say alongside your child:
Heavenly Father, I am seeking wisdom and understanding in my studies. Grant me focus and clarity, so I can grasp new concepts and retain information. Fill my heart with a love for learning, and help me to appreciate the joy of discovery. Guide me in my studies, and help me to use the knowledge I gain to serve others and glorify you. Amen.
4. God-Honoring Friendships and Relationships
You may worry that other people will have an unwanted influence on your child's life. Seeking God's guidance to encourage and foster healthy relationships and supportive connections can help your child thrive.
Pray for protection from negative influences and ask for friendships that align with Christian values. Create daily prayers based on Bible verses for students, such as John 4:7-9 TLB: "Dear friends, let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better."
Lord, help my child to choose friends who will encourage them to make good choices and to grow closer to you. Please help my child be a positive influence on other children and show them your love through my child's actions. Amen.
5. Boldness to Live Out Their Faith at School
The Bible encourages Christians to live out their faith, especially in more challenging environments, such as school.
Build daily Christian prayers for children based on Bible verses like "All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace," (Isaiah 54:13) or "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9).
Heavenly Father, I pray for my child as they return to school. Please give them the strength and boldness to live out their faith. Provide them with the courage to speak Your truth, to stay firm in faith, and to overcome opposition. May their school year be a testament to your love and grace. Amen.
As children return to school, remember, no prayer is too small. God cares deeply about children's minds, hearts, and futures. Encourage your child to build a routine around prayer, inviting God into their everyday school life.
