7 Ways to Become Closer to God as a Family

A relationship with God is the best relationship you can have, especially as a family. Dinner time is an opportunity to pass the food among those we love, share laughter, allow transparency, extend grace and grow, as a family, in your relationship with God. The family table is a space where parents can model Christ’s love, grandparents can provide wisdom, children can experience a sense of belonging, and friends can experience hospitality. Moreover, passing the dinner plate should be more than just eating so we can get up and move on. It should be an opportunity to engage one another and help each other in our walks with Christ. The family table is just one of many places where your family can grow together in Christ. If you’re ready to become closer to God as a family, these seven activities will help you.

Engage in Scripture Together

Another way to become closer to God as a family is to engage in God’s Word every day and with each other. If your family has never read the entire Bible, now is a great time to start this journey. There are a number of resources available to help you read the Bible in a year. It’s important that you also set goals for your reading. Ask yourselves why you are doing this. Do you want to better understand Scripture? Do you want to know God better? After touching on these goals, ask each other where you want to be in your relationship with the Lord by the end of your Bible reading. This journey will take time but it is totally worth it.

Share Your Spiritual Lives

At least once a week, your family should take time to share what God is doing in your lives. This can be a 30 minute to an hour long “family talk” where you all can discover how each of you is doing in your relationship with God and how you’re growing in your knowledge of Him. Make sure your family isn’t dealing in generalities either. If someone asks, “How is your spiritual life doing?” and you, or someone else says “Oh, it’s OK,” this means little. Push for deeper and more honest communication with each other. If someone asks how your spiritual life is doing, you can respond with something like, “This week, God is teaching me patience. There are two situations God used this week to teach me the importance of patience.” These kinds of conversations will connect your family on a faith level.
