A tarot reading, whether it’s performed by you or by someone else, can give you a lot of great insight into your future. Unfortunately, however, your readings aren’t always going to tell you what you want or are hoping to hear.

Every reader has been there. You are doing a reading, you lay out cards, and one, or several, of “those” cards show up. You know, the traditionally scary looking cards that cause anyone not acquainted with Tarot to want to bolt. The fact is, these cards usually deal with internal issues or struggles, and our attitudes towards them.

No matter how you try to spin it, some readings indicate that bad luck or a dark period is on its way. When that happens, all you can do is make the best of the situation. Hopefully, it won’t happen to you anytime soon. You’ll likely know if it does, however, because your gloomy reading will probably include one of these doomsday cards. Here are 6 cards that are terrifying in Tarot readings.

Ten of Swords

Regardless of the type of deck you’re using, it features a man lying face-down and with ten swords in his back. When you see this frightening and often startling card, it’s usually an indicator that you are likely going to suffer some unwelcome surprise in the near future. Whether it’s a failure at work, the sudden breakup of a relationship, a natural disaster, or anything in between, these cards typically indicate that something untoward is coming your way. On the other hand, though, the card sometimes means that something bad has already happened- usually that you’ve been “backstabbed” by someone you cared for. Either way, this card doesn’t indicate happy times, so if it crops up in your reading, brace yourself for the worst.

Death

No list of terrible cards would be complete with the death card being a part of it. The Death card is probably the most feared and misunderstood of all the cards in the Tarot deck. Just the mention of the card’s name has people shaking in their boots! In general, people tend to take the meaning of this card far too literally and fear that the indication is for the death of either themselves or others. Death is symbolic of the ending of a major phase or aspect of your life that may bring about the beginning of something far more valuable and important. It may be difficult to let go of the past at times but you will soon see how important it is so that you can bring renewal and transformation into your life. If you resist these necessary endings, you may experience pain, both emotionally and physically.

Five of Pentacles

The Five of Pentacles typically points to a time of financial strife, poverty and adversity and indicates that you have suffered a significant financial loss or failure. This card shows the many faces of material misfortune and lack, including loss of funds, general poverty, illness, unemployment, and solitude. If you have suffered a loss, know that there are people around you who are willing to help. There is always a solution and always a way out, so either open your eyes and go to it, or close your eyes and let the inner light guide you. Often, what has caused these financial problems is a matter of your own emotions – greed will lead to loss, anxiety will lead to error, possessiveness will lead to solitude. By focusing on the material, you lose sight of your spiritual development.

3 of Swords

The Three of Swords represents rejection, sadness, loneliness, heartbreak, betrayal, separation and grief. Such events feel so painful because they are unexpected. However, the Three of Swords often serves as a warning sign to show when one or more of these are possible. By preparing for this difficult event, the emotional blow can be minimized. For example, the pain of losing something you once valued (such as a ‘comfortable’ relationship in which you are no longer growing) is necessary in order to prepare you for a more fulfilling experience in the future. The Three of Swords therefore serves as a reminder that if you can start to see pain as a learning opportunity, life will suddenly become less painful.

The Tower

The Tower card often features some pretty frightening illustrations. More often than not, the tower is being struck by lightning and bombarded by flying objects. Your first instinct when you see this card might be to panic, but panicking isn’t going to do you any good. How many times have you sat safely within the narrow confines of your life, comfortable in your current thoughts, beliefs and expectations? Then, out of the blue, something "shocking" happens that completely destroys your picture of peace and harmony. It blows your mind or throws you for a loop. This is what the Tower card symbolizes, and it can be pretty scary. So, while the card does often mean that something is going to come out of the blue and shock you or shake up your world in some way, just be grateful that the card has given you a little bit of a “heads up” about the event.
