Woman Thinking

When was the last time something didn't go as planned? Perhaps you were supposed to go on vacation, but an unexpected storm halted your trip? Or maybe you were ready to start a new job, only to find out the company wasn't a good fit for you? When life doesn't go the way you planned, it can be disheartening.

Thankfully, you are not alone in this struggle. Believers across the globe are also experiencing a similar situation. And God Himself understands the pain you are experiencing today. God intended for all humanity to live in perfect fellowship with Him, yet mankind sinned against Him and fell (Genesis 3). By leaning close to God, you can bounce back and ensure light illuminates the darkest of situations.

1. Pray, Pray, Pray

Paul teaches about praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). When life doesn't go as planned, go to the Lord in prayer and pour out your feelings to Him (1 Peter 5:7). Even if you may feel like your feelings are “complaints,” remind yourself that God cares about all your feelings. He will help you move forward in life. As Paul says, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).

2. Talk it Out

Talking with a friend, family member, or medical professional can do wonders when we are feeling like life isn't going the way we planned. These individuals will be able to provide support, encouragement, and hope in our lives. God didn't create us to be alone; He created us to be in community with others. Be honest and open with others as you process the harder parts of life – never feel you have to suppress your emotions.

3. Go For a Run

When life doesn't go as planned, it can be incredibly frustrating. Instead of taking frustration and anger out on others, go for a run. Play your favorite songs and take a 30–60-minute run. This simple exercise can help you feel better, cultivate a clearer mind, and bring healing into your heart. If running isn't your thing, try to go for a walk and admire God’s creation around you.

4. Do Something You Enjoy

When was the last time you took time to do something you enjoy? Not just sitting down for a 30-minute sitcom — something that truly fills your cup. Perhaps creating a craft, spending time with a friend, or reading. Take time today to do something you enjoy. Life is too short to waste – make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15-16)!

5. Find Comfort in Knowing This is a Temporary Season

Life doesn't often go as planned, but that doesn't mean you need to give in to despair. At these times, find comfort in knowing this present season is temporary. Life will improve with time; you just have to give it some time. For the time being, think about a few ways to make it through the present day.

Jesus tells us, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:27-34).

Just focus on the present day; trust God with your life. Even though you may feel like life isn't going your way, God is bringing growth into your life. Look for the little ways God has helped you grow, both spiritually and emotionally, during the challenging parts of life.

6. Look Forward to Eternity

When life feels discouraging, challenge yourself to look to eternity. Revelation 21:4 tells us, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Eternity will be full of joy, happiness, peace, and love. Life may not turn out the way you wanted, but all eternity will be paradise with the Lord.

7. Keep Your Eyes Focused on Jesus

Hebrews 12:2 says, “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Rather than giving into defeat, keep your eyes focused on Jesus. He is always with you, protecting, and guiding you. Think about a few things you can do today to keep your eyes focused on Jesus, such as praying to Him, studying the Bible, or journaling.

Life rarely unfolds exactly the way we expect, and disappointments can leave us feeling discouraged, confused, or even hopeless. Yet God is still present in every detour, delay, and unanswered question. Even when your plans fall apart, His plans remain steady and good. Rather than allowing setbacks to define you, allow them to draw you closer to the Lord. Continue praying, leaning on others, caring for yourself, and fixing your eyes on Jesus. One difficult season does not determine the rest of your story. God is still working, still guiding, and still bringing purpose and growth through every challenge you face.
