Sometimes, it can be difficult to know when to stay and when to walk away. From difficult relationships to stressful career choices, we all face these challenges at some point in our lives. Many people are raised to stick with something, no matter what; to stay the course and trust the process.

But what if you’re not where you’re meant to be? If you’ve been noticing moments, small or large, that seem to be pulling you in another direction, these could be God’s signs to walk away.

Take a look at this guide on how to know God is telling you to move on. These signs are a starting point for prayer and discernment, so always consider how change will affect you and how God’s direction in tough decisions could guide you toward something better.

1. You’ve Lost Peace, and It’s Not Coming Back

Seeking peace in your heart is a way to connect to God daily. If you find that you’ve lost any sense of peace about your current situation, no matter what angle you think about it from, you could inadvertently be quenching the Holy Spirit

Gut feelings can be a message from God. Your prayers could lead to positive, peaceful feelings that may gently guide you toward the right decision.

2. Doors Keep Closing, No Matter How Hard You Try

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Failing to achieve promotions, missing personal opportunities, or being rejected can all weigh heavily on your soul. However, in some cases, these closing doors could be a sign from the Divine, telling you to change where or how you’re seeking fulfillment.

Placing your trust in God and believing that these doors are closing for a reason may be the key to unlocking new opportunities. Seek counsel from your faith leaders or journal on these closed doors to gain a new perspective.

3. You’re Staying Out of Fear, Not Faith

Fear can be the end of progress. If you want to move on but feel like it’s too much of a risk, it could be worth analyzing that feeling and praying for guidance.

Consider this passage from the Bible:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:18-19).

Here, Isaiah is talking to God’s people who are currently imprisoned. You, too, might feel imprisoned in your current circumstances, whether you’re feeling stuck in your career or a stressful housing situation. If you’re scared of the unknown, pray for guidance and the courage to take a leap of faith — or gain new faith to persevere where you are.

4. The Situation is Harming Your Spiritual or Emotional Health

If you’ve stuck with a situation out of a sense of loyalty or commitment, but it’s constantly wearing on your spiritual self, that could be a sign from God that what you’re doing is not in your own best interests. While tough times can build resilience, sometimes you need to make a change for your own well-being.

Feeling lost, low, or lacking in faith are all symptoms of eroded spiritual wellness. Take the time to do something that raises your belief, like prayer or attending your church, and listen for further guidance while you feel rejuvenated and connected to the Divine.

5. God is Birthing a New Desire or Vision in Your Heart

If you’re turning up physically every day but your heart is elsewhere, you may already be listening to the guidance of God without even realizing it. Yearning for something new can be a sign that the Divine is involved in shifting your attention elsewhere.

Of course, we all get tired of everyday things from time to time. That’s why prayer, faith, and thoughtful discernment are important: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Trusting God in transition and transformation could help you discover something new and fulfilling.

6. Wise, Godly Counsel Confirms What You Already Sense

Sometimes, you already know it’s time to move on, and signs from God are merely the confirmation you need. When you’re still unsure, seek counsel from those with Godly wisdom and experience.

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach” (Proverbs 22:17). This proverb reminds you to absorb the counsel of the wise; even if you don’t act on it now, it could help you further down the line if you keep these teachings within your heart.

Moving on is rarely the same as giving up. It’s not a weakness to accept that a situation isn’t correct for you. It takes strength, courage, and faith to move away from something and try another path.

Christian advice for letting go involves having trust in God and His plan for you, even if that means letting go of something familiar. After all, it’s possible to become used to something that is harming you. Be discerning and avoid knee-jerk decisions. Timely, thoughtful change taken in tandem with wise counsel is more likely to yield positive results, especially when you seek out guidance from the Lord with humility and courage in your heart.
