Sometimes, life seems uncertain, and you feel alone and abandoned. You might wonder whether God is even paying attention. Maybe you've been stuck in a season of waiting, hoping, and praying for direction. You might be hurting and feeling frustrated.

But what if this time isn't punishment or rejection? What if it's preparation, and God is right beside you through all of it?

Throughout scripture, we can see that God often works behind the scenes, shaping people before revealing something greater. That doesn't always feel holy, though. It can feel like heartbreak and loneliness. But if you're feeling stretched too thin, take heart. You might be seeing the signs that God is preparing you for something big.

Here are six signs to help you recognize what may be happening.

1. You're facing unexpected challenges.

Life has thrown you curveballs you didn't ask for. Maybe the job you lost was one you loved. Maybe the person who left was someone you thought would always be there. You may not know why it happened, but what if it's part of something bigger?

But trials can reveal and refine what's already in us. As James wrote, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2–3).

Joy isn't usually the first response to hard times, of course. But pain can be a teacher, and pressure can reveal what comfort hides. Challenges can be signs that God is preparing you for what comes next. Trust His plan.

2. You feel a holy discontent.

There's a stirring in your heart, an unsettled feeling that something must change. You want something to change. Something deep inside says there's more, even if you don't know what that looks like yet.

That restlessness may be a nudge from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, God lets discontent wake us up and draw us into something new. And sometimes, it takes us a while to figure it all out. If you're in a season of waiting and something inside you keeps saying, "Not this," don't ignore it. That frustration might be the first whisper of transformation.

3. Doors are closing.

Plans that felt solid are suddenly falling through. Opportunities disappear. People move on. You're left wondering what went wrong or what you did wrong.

But closed doors don't always mean failure. They can also be a form of divine protection or redirection. Think about Revelation 3:7: "What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open."

That doesn't mean it won't hurt. Sometimes, the only way God can reroute you is by helping you let go of what you couldn't live without. It could be one of the signs God is preparing you for something big, even if you can't see it yet.

4. You're growing in faith and character.

You've started praying more often. You're learning to depend on God daily, maybe because you had no other choice. And now your patience is growing, your pride is softening, and your trust in God is becoming deeper.

That kind of growth doesn't usually happen during the easy times. But as the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, "Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3–4).

You may not realize it, but you're becoming someone new. Someone more grounded. More aware. More ready. And that's no accident. It's preparation.

5. You sense a call to step out in faith.

You feel prompted to move, change careers, forgive someone, or start something new. It doesn't always make sense on paper, and you might not have all the details. But the sense that you're being called doesn't go away.

Trusting God's plan often works this way. He asked Abraham to leave his home without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). Faith is rarely about having the full picture. It's about believing that God's path is good, even when you can't see the destination.

Just don't confuse waiting with being passive. Preparation requires movement. It may not feel bold, but a small step in faith is still a step. Keep walking, one step at a time.

6. You're being positioned through divine connections.

People come into your life at just the right time. You cross paths with someone who offers wisdom, encouragement, or even opportunity. It doesn't feel random.

God can prepare your next step by bringing the right people into your life at just the right moment. Consider Ruth meeting Boaz (Ruth 2–3) or David's friendship with Jonathan (1 Samuel 18:1). Divine appointments like these are often part of the unfolding plan. They're connections that shape your future.

But be discerning. Not every new voice is divine. Stay close to God so you can recognize the difference between a holy connection and a shiny distraction.

Trusting God's Plan

Trusting God's plan isn't always easy. Recognizing the signs that God is preparing you can be tough. In fact, it's sometimes so subtle it seems hidden. But think about it:

Before David became king, he spent years tending sheep. Before Esther saved her people, she spent time in quiet obedience. Before His public ministry, even Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness, fasting, praying, and being tested (Luke 4:1–13).

Difficult seasons of waiting may feel like delays, but they're sacred. They're essential. It's where faith is tested, and character takes root. These seasons are when God builds the depth that your next steps require.

Philippians 1:6 offers a promise: "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion." Remember, you're not being overlooked. You're being prepared.

Keep praying. Keep listening. While God prepares the way, we still have to take the next step, no matter how small. Don't wait for the clouds to part or the sign to be obvious. Take the steps you can take. That's how you walk into something big, one obedient move at a time.

And when the time is right, you'll look back and realize that every challenge, every delay, and every shift was part of a process bigger than you knew. Keep trusting God's plan—even when you can't see where it's going.
