You finally crawl into bed after a long day of work, taking the kids to and from school, making dinner, helping with homework, and preparing for the next day. Your mind is still racing through to-do lists and worries.
In our fast-paced society, where we get information in 15-second videos on social media, many people end their days feeling drained or distracted rather than peaceful and purposeful.
What would your mind be like if you truly gave everything to God? What if you lived each day serving God’s higher purpose, one day at a time? Would you be less stressed and more relaxed?
Here are five intentional ways to end each day with a heart centered on God.
1. Reflect on God’s Presence Throughout the Day
Take time to notice where God showed up over the past day — in conversations, blessings, or challenges. Perhaps rain poured down a moment after you stepped into your office. Maybe it was finding a quarter on a bench and a homeless man to give it to. Or maybe your child learned something interesting at school. God has endless ways He can show you His presence as you go about your life, in both mundane and amazing ways. Chances are good that most of the things you witness daily lean toward the former and not the latter.
Consider Psalm 77 11–12, “I will remember the deeds of the Lord.” Consider journaling or quiet reflection to help you connect the day’s moments to God’s faithfulness.
2. Express Gratitude Before You Rest
Thank God for the specific blessings of the day, even the small ones. Gratitude can shift our focus from stress to joy.
You might give thanks like this: “God, thank you for the ability to walk. Thank you for our beautiful house. Thank you for my healthy family. Thank you for our income. Thank you for the lovely weather. Thank you for protecting us from illness.”
If you’re praying for answers, remember to pray as if you’ve already received them. Mark 11:24 says, “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Further, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Keep a nightly gratitude journal or pray as a family. This will continue to keep your focus on thankfulness rather than stress. You might receive some insights from God as you meditate and pray.
3. Release What You Can’t Control
There are only so many things you can control. You can’t control traffic, the weather, what other people say or do, what your partner does, or what your kids do.
Surrender worries or unfinished business to God before you sleep. Consider the well-known Serenity Prayer about accepting things you cannot change. This simple prayer has never been more relevant than now, with so many things in the world to worry about.
Meditate on 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” Also, Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Let God take care of your battles. He’s got this. He’s the master planner, after all. God is very thorough when He works in your life.
Pray as you lie in bed, “Lord, I give You the things I couldn’t fix today.”
4. End With Scripture or Prayer
Reading a Psalm, saying a short prayer, or meditating on God’s Word centers your spirit and calms your mind. Couple your prayers with deep breathing, which also helps you relax. Pray one short sentence as you inhale and another as you exhale with your eyes closed.
“Lord, please help me (one deep breath in)
to cast my cares on you.” (one deep breath out)
“Fight my battles for me. (one deep breath in)
“You are my champion.” (one deep breath out)
These Bible verses can help as you breathe. Joshua 1:8, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; Meditate on it day and night.” Also, try Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will lie down and sleep.”
This habit of daily prayer and meditation before sleep brings calm and perspective to your mind.
5. Look Ahead With Hope, Not Pressure
Shift from “what’s next” to “what matters.” There is always someone who is in a worse situation. God doesn’t promise a life without trials and tribulations. But He does promise to get us through it. Jesus told his disciples in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Christians are often taught to “be in the world but not of the world.” Yes, we will experience fear, anger, upset, and unhappiness. But we overcome these because we have a guide in Jesus who will get us through anything.
Read and pray about Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” When you give your day to God, He will fill in the details. Ask God for guidance for the next day, trusting His plan over your own.
Ending your day with purpose realigns heart and mind with God’s peace. View each night as an opportunity to reset in His presence, so you can rest more easily and get a better night’s sleep.
Try this prayer before you drift off to sleep. “Lord, thank You for today. Help me rest knowing that you’re in control and give me strength to walk with purpose tomorrow.”
