21 Beautiful Verses to Heal a Broken Heart

Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

God is always close to those who are hurt and in need of healing. It makes no difference to God whether His children are feeling the pain of a physical injury or suffering from an emotional wound. As Psalm 34 says, He is close to those who are suffering from broken hearts. He helps them to heal their bleeding spirits and restore their hearts. He does not leave anyone to suffer their pain alone. Instead, He stays near to help guide those who are hurting so that they can find healing. He restores broken hearts just as surely as He uplifts wounded spirits and straightened crippled limbs while He was on Earth.

Psalm 147:3 "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

Heartbreak can feel like a physical wound. In fact, it can have many of the same dangers and complications that an actual, physical injury would bring. Emotions effect your body, and the maelstrom of pain and stress that follows heartbreak can do very real damage to your body. Just like a physical wound, emotional healing is not always easy. It is painful and can be messy, but it must be done. Unlike physical injuries, however, emotional wounds will not close on their own. You must put forth the work to reach for emotional healing and allow God to help you mend your broken heart.

Isaiah 43:1 "Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are Mine."

One of the worst parts of dealing with a broken heart is the sensation that you are all alone. You feel that you carry your burden without anyone to help you even when your friends and family are beside you. Thankfully, you are wrong. You do not have to carry your pain alone, and you will not be abandoned while you are attempting to heal. You do not have to be whole to be loved by God. He calls to you in both sickness and health, and He calls you by name. As you work to heal your broken heart, let God ease your burden. As you recover from your broken heart, remember that you are not alone.

Psalm 23:4: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff comfort me."

Broken hearts are not always the result of something innocent. People end up with broken hearts when those they trusted act maliciously and betray them. Hearts are broken when loved ones die too young. Broken hearts are too often caused by evil and cruelty. God is not only with those who are hurt by accident. He stands beside those who were wounded by hatred and treachery. Remember, Christ Himself was betrayed by one He had trusted. As you try to heal your broken heart, He stands by you and will protect you from further evil so that you may be made whole once again.

1 Chronicles 28:20 "Fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God will be with you; He will not fail you, nor forsake you!"

When you are trying to recover from a broken heart, it can feel like the world is against you. You feel that you are fighting a battle alone. Depending on how and why your heart was broken, you may even feel that you have been abandoned by those closest to you. As 2 Chronicles 28 says, do not be dismayed. Even when it feels like you are alone, God is with you. He will not abandon you to struggle alone nor will He allow you to continually fail to heal. He will be with you, and if you are willing to listen, He will be of great help as you journey toward healing.

Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart forever."

It is almost a cliche to say that you should let God be your strength, but the fact that the phrase is said often does not mean that it is not true. With God as your strength, you do not need to rely upon your broken heart. You can let your heart rest and heal while you trust God to act as your strength. Anyone who has ever had an emotional wound knows that it is difficult to allow yourself the vulnerability that is needed to heal an emotional wound when you are still trying to be strong. Stop relying on your own strength and rely upon God's instead so that your broken heart can heal.

Psalm 46:1-2 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the sea."

God is always with you. He is there when things are going well, and you are on top of the world. He is also there when everything falls apart, and you feel lost and alone. When your heart is broken and your spirit is wounded, you may wonder if God is there with you at all. If He is with you, then why do you feel so alone? Why did He allow you to be hurt in the first place? It may be difficult, but when your heart is broken, trust that you are not alone. God is with you, and He will stay with you no matter how terrible your troubles and struggles may become. He will not forsake you regardless of how badly your heart has been wounded.

John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."

God's love is unlike any love that will be found on Earth. He cares for us in ways that no human could eve hope to match, though Christians do their bests to show some echo of God's love in their own relationships. As such, when your heart breaks do not feel as if you are lost or broken forever. God is with you, and He will help you heal your heart. You will recover from your heartbreak with His help, and you will no longer fear letting another in. You will be whole once more just as God promised so long ago.

2 Timothy 1:7: "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love and of a sound mind."

Trying to open your heart again after betrayal or loss is terrifying. Often, all you can think about is what it felt like as your heart was broken. This, however, is not the spirit that God gave us. As such, the feeling will pass. You will find that you can let others into your heart once more and that you will be able to love again. Your heart will not remain broken forever. God will help you heal and restore your spirit's strength so that you will no longer have to feel as if you have a spirit that is infected by fear, but one that is filled with the knowledge of God's power and overflowing with His love.

1 Corinthians 13:7 "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

Love may seem like an impossibility after your heart has been broken. You wonder if your heart is too damaged for you to ever love anyone again. You wonder if anyone could ever love you. You wonder if you can ever bring yourself to let down your walls enough to love someone again. You think that if you keep your walls up, you will not be hurt again. No matter what you fear, however, love will find a way. Love endures no matter what this world throws at it. Your heart will begin to yearn for love again, no matter how impossible that may seem now.

Psalm 27:1-2 "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell."

Sometimes your heart is broken deliberately through betrayal or malice. When that happens, you feel twice as vulnerable as ever because those that hurt you likely still know you so well. They were likely part of your life, and they know your fears and weak points. It would not be hard for them to hurt you again. Do not be afraid, but instead lean on the Lord. As difficult as the battle ahead may be, you are not alone. You will not be beaten down by those that would hurt you. You will stand tall with Christ beside you, and you will be both healed and protected from further harm

1 John 4:4 "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than He that is in the world."

Children have an incredible capacity to love. Even when they have been hurt, they still reach out to the one that hurt them and try to understand. They do not immediately turn their backs on those that harmed them like so many adults do. Instead, children often try to continue to be friends with those who might have hurt them. They do not understand why another person would be deliberately cruel. When your heart has been broken, it is easy to want to be cold and push people away. Do not do so. Be like a child who seeks to understand why someone hurt them. You may never get a satisfactory answer, but you may find it in yourself to forgive them instead.

Romans 8:15 "For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

One of the hardest parts of dealing with emotional wounds is the fear that you are going to wind up in the exact same situation again. When you break your arm, you are not normally worried that anything and everything will cause you to rebreak the bone. You might be more careful climbing trees in the future, but you would not be afraid to walk down the stairs. With emotional wounds, you fear that anyone could and would hurt you again, so you push people away. Do not do that. God gave you a spirit that is not meant to fear, so do not tie yourself to fear. Instead, rejoice in God's love.

Hebrews 13:5-6 "For He has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' So that we may boldly say, 'The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do to me.'"

When your heart is broken, you may feel like even God has abandoned you. Never believe that this is true. He is always there for you, walking beside you. Look around you and you will see that God is always with you. Should you forget, turn to Scripture and prayer to help you remember that you are not alone. Should that not be enough, reach out to a friend or spiritual mentor that you trust. Let them help you reconnect with God so that He can lead you through your healing and help you stand on your own two feet once again.

Peace can be a hard thing to find when your heart is hurting. You may be trapped in sorrow. You may be angry at yourself or at the people who hurt you. You may be afraid of never recovering or of being hurt again. When such negative emotions overwhelm you, turn to God. He will help you find peace. You might find some much needed calm and serenity through reading Scripture or through prayer. Whatever path you take, know that God is there for you, and He will help you find the calm in the middle of the storm so that your broken heart can heal.

Isaiah 44:8 "Fear not, neither be afraid: have not I told you from that time, and have declared it? You are even My witnesses. Is there a God beside Me?"

Even when your heart is breaking, God is with you. Do not be afraid that you will never recover. He will be beside you every step of the way. As you begin to heal, you may be afraid to reach out to others and let them in. You do not want to have your heart broken again, so you shut out the world. If no one reaches your heart, then no one can break it. Do not live with such fear. God will be with you always, and He will not allow your heart to be so hurt that it cannot love again. He will protect you, keep you safe and fill you with His perfect love.

Psalm 55:22 "Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you."

Difficult though it can be to believe at times, God does not give us more than we can carry. He is there, walking beside us, and when the burden becomes too much, He is there to help us continue on. He shoulders some of the burden if we are willing to let Him help us. It is only when we refuse God's help that we are left overburdened and alone. The emotional pain of a broken heart is a burden that has few equals. Do not be so proud or so blind that you insist on carrying it alone. Allow God to help you through the healing process and take some of the weight off your shoulders.

Revelation 21:4 "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

In God's kingdom, there will be no pain, no suffering, no mourning. As such, why would you think that He would allow you to suffer forever in this life? This world is not perfect, but if God will eventually do away with pain, you know that He will not forsake you to it forever. You will recover. You will heal. Your heart will be made whole, and you will cry no more. Trust that God will bring you to happiness and healing. It is not always easy, but know that God is with you. He was with you when He formed you, and He will be with you in the end. He is with you here now, as well. Do not despair. Instead, trust that He will bring you healing.
