6 Prayers For the Wrongfully Blamed

Have you ever been falsely accused or lied about? If you’ve been wrongfully blamed or misunderstood for your intentions, turn to Scripture and the power of prayer. Regarding false accusations, the psalmist says, “For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit” (Psalm 35:20). This is an accurate description of the motives and results of false accusations. People lie about the innocent in order to stir up trouble. People accuse others falsely as a revenge tactic, power play or when they think they have something to gain. This behavior is unbiblical; moreover, we should respond in a godly way. It’s important that we pray and trust God during a period of false accusation and loneliness. While it may not change your circumstances, it will stabilize your spirit. Always remember that you have a basis for confidence since God Himself is righteous. In the end, His justice and fair play will abound toward you as well. Here are six prayers for the wrongfully blamed.

The Bible tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). We desperately need that reminder when we’re wrongfully blamed and under attack. Let’s face it. Unless we guard our own heart, we will soon be down in the gutter with our opponents. We’ll be tempted to attack them as they have attacked us, to vilify them, to smear their reputation and in general do whatever we have to do to get even with them. It’s frightening how quickly we can fall into the attack mode when we get angry at heart. But there’s hope in God. If you want to turn your heart around, pray this prayer: Dear Loving God, thank you for another day of life. Today, I seek a change of heart. I was wrongfully blamed for something and it weighs heavily on my heart. Today, I seek a change of heart. I suffer from my hardness. Please change me Lord. I know that only You can do this. Amen.

It’s possible in our haste to defend ourselves, we will talk too much, too soon and with too much emotion. There are times when we need to speak the truth, and in those moments we must speak truth in love. State the facts, lay out the truth as you see it, don’t presume to judge another person’s heart, even if they are unfairly judging yours and don’t say anything in a heated moment that you will regret later. If you are ready to speak the truth as graciously as possible, pray this prayer: Dear Lord, has it come to this? Is there any chance at all? Or is all hope lost? Please show me Lord, once again as you have in days past. Show me Lord Your power and Your glory. May Your Spirit fill my spirit. Let me rise up again and be strong in Christ, for I know all control is Yours alone. Amen.

Remember this. You can’t control what people do to you or what they say about you. Technology has made it too easy to say whatever we want and then post it on Facebook or YouTube or a discussion board regardless of the truth. Our challenge must be to guard our own hearts. In almost all situations when you’re falsely accused, the truth of God’s point of view will be more than what you see or what your critics see. And God’s will always goes beyond our limited field of vision. What you want is truth to be told and God’s Will to be done. If you’re looking for a prayer that focused on the Lord, not on you or your accusers, turn to this simple prayer: Dear Lord, let the truth come out and let Your will be done. I pray that I keep my focus on you and you alone. Amen.

Don’t be surprised when you’re falsely accused. We won’t always get along with our brothers and sisters in Christ and these same brothers and sisters may not have your best interests at hand. This is clear when you look at Ephesians. In Ephesians 3, we receive a reminder that God is able to do far beyond anything we could ask or imagine. When we turn to Chapter 4, the first thing that is said out of his mouth: “Always be humble and gentle. Patiently put up with each other and love each other” (Ephesians 4:2). Sometimes people hear what they want to hear regardless of the facts. We should not be overly surprised when, despite our best efforts, our actions are criticized and our motives are questioned. If you are open and ready to pray for the person who accused you, pray this simple prayer: Dear God, if I hurt others, give me strength to apologize. If people hurt me, give me strength to forgive. Amen.

All falsely accused will feel like the victim at some point. You know you’re in victim mode when you feel wronged, used by your friends, involved in unfair accusations and feel like you can’t get your side of the story fairly told. You also know you’re hooked by what was said about you when you can’t stop talking about it, you become consumed with the issue, you lose all focus and start doing foolish things. When you’re in this headspace, you end up frustrated and miserable and nothing is solved. If you’re ready to fight against becoming a victim, pray this prayer: Dear Lord, today I feel weary and worn. I want to obey You but I have clung desperately to hope and still feel hopeless. Please strengthen my heart today, renew Your vision for my life and the joy of my salvation. I fix my eyes on You and look to You alone for my help, my hope, my strength and my deliverance. Amen.

The psalmist says, “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts; and I am helped; my heart exults and with my song I give Him thanks” (Psalm 28:7). When you’re wrongfully blamed, it’s important that you trust in God to keep you secure and free, for God is our strength and shield. If you’re ready for God to help you find security and freedom in Him alone, turn to this prayer: Heavenly Father, I may not understand why some people do the things they do or how everything will work out, but I trust You. I don’t see a way, but I know You will make a way. I have faith at this very moment You are touching hearts, opening doors and lining up the right breaks and opportunities. Things may look dark and bleak now, but I have faith that my dawn is coming. Amen.
