Keep your eyes on Him

In the year 423, Simeon Stylites the Elder climbed on a pillar in Syria and remained there until his death 37 years later. Antony realized that was the very thing his heart was aching to do. He wanted to possess nothing in this world except Jesus. When he had given away everything he owned, Antony visited various holy men to gain wisdom about the spiritual life. He eventually settled down in a solitary place in the desert where he lived until he was nearly 100 years old. He prayed constantly, worked with his hands, read the Bible, and gave to any poor person who visited him. Antony is remembered as a man whose one desire was to know and love God. Other early Christians went to similar extremes.

Keep your eyes on Him

Reading the Bible regularly is vital. “To love the Lord with our best love is to love, treasure, and muse on the word of God,” writes Misaras. “The Psalms are filled with the Psalmist’s desire and yearning to muse on God’s word, ponder on His precepts, read and listen to His word, and so forth – especially Psalm 119. When we muse on God’s word and we treasure it, we love the Lord more! To love the Lord with our first love is to live a life of prayer. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 we have the charge to ‘pray unceasingly’ – when we pray unceasingly, when we breathe the Lord in and converse with Him continually, we spontaneously love Him and give Him the first place.”
