Translating the Bible

John Wycliffe was a professor and theologian in the 14th Century. It was time when only the wealthy could afford to have a Bible, and most people couldn’t read or understand the Scriptures written in Latin. Wycliffe was part of the reformation, and translated Latin into English. He went against Rome’s doctrine. "By this translation, the Scriptures have become vulgar, and they are more available to lay, and even to women who can read, than they were to learned scholars, who have a high intelligence. So the pearl of the gospel is scattered and trodden underfoot by swine." Going against the church brought heavy persecution until his death. Even after he died his body was dug up and burned. "I am ready to defend my convictions even unto death…. I have followed the Sacred Scriptures and the holy doctors,” he said.

Stopping Slavery

William Wilberforce was a believer and politician in England who helped end the slave trade after becoming a Christian. He resolved to follow God and live a right life that would help others towards freedom. England took goods to Africa in exchange for slaves. They transported slaves to the West Indies and brought them back to England. “Never, never will we desist till we have wiped away this scandal from the Christian name, released ourselves from the load of guilt, under which we at present labor, and extinguished every trace of this bloody traffic, of which our posterity, looking back to the history of these enlightened times, will scarce believe that it has been suffered to exist so long a disgrace and dishonor to this country.”

'Preach the Honor and Glory'

Andrew was the first disciple of Christ and became so influential that he planted churches. Also a disciple of John, son of Jonas—Andrew brought his brother Peter to meet with Christ and receive His anointing. After Christ’s crucifixion, authorities moved in on Andrew in Greece for preaching the Gospel. Aegeas was the governor in a city called Patras and told Andrew to cease from preaching and tell the people to worship and sacrifice to the Romn gods. Andrew said “the One who lives in heaven. And once you have known Him, you will worship Him, since He is the One true God. In so doing, this judge of men will turn his mind away from false gods and blind idols. “I would not preach the honor and glory of the cross if I feared the death of the cross.” Andrew murdered for his faith.
