St. Maximilian Kolbe– the Saint of Addicts

St. Max published articles about what the Nazis were really doing in Poland in the 1930s. He was soon arrested and imprisoned at Auschwitz. After a man tried to escape the camp, ten men were chosen to be killed in reprisal. One man fell to his knees and pleaded for his life. “Please, I have a wife and family.” St. Max stepped forward and asked to be killed in his stead. The Nazis were so upset by this act of love that rather than kill the 10 men outright, they were simply placed in a basement room and left to starve to death with no water or food. It took over two weeks for the ten men to die. When he was canonized a saint in 1982, guess who was there to witness it? The man whose life he had saved at the camp.
