Thirst, in this context, is the expression of something much more primitive in us than a need for water. Among his last words Jesus said, “I thirst.” My hope is that he whispered the words. After all, his mouth was dry. He had little air for speech and had to choose his words wisely. But there is something else. That which is truly sovereign within us has no need to raise its voice. Jesus lived a surrendered life, and that surrender remained intact even in death. To love like that, we are encouraged to follow his example.
