The Most Shocking Prophecies in the Bible

The Bible contains countless prophecies that have endured the test of time. These prophecies have touched on everything from the Babylonian captivity and the restoration of Israel as a nation, to the coming of Jesus and the end times. What is so shocking about these prophecies is that many of these were given thousands of years before their actual fulfillment and have been fulfilled with 100 percent accuracy over time. In many cases, the Bible has clearly and specifically predicted the future and the fulfillment of these prophecies were verified by historians and archaeologists throughout the ages. Prophecy is what makes the Bible unique among other religious works. Thousands of years ago, the Bible challenged all other religions and prophets to use prophecy as the test to measure all other religions (Isaiah 41:22-23). God challenged other religions to put their reputations on the line by accurately predicting the future. Here are six of the most shocking prophecies in the Bible.

The Messiah Will Bruise the Serpents Head

One of the most important prophecies in the Bible is found in Genesis 3:15. It says, “And I (God) will put enmity between you (Satan) and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He (the Seed) shall bruise your (Satan’s) head, and you shall bruise His heel. This verse is considered to be the first Messianic prophecy in the Bible. It is the first promise by God Himself of a coming Redeemer proclaimed just after the fall of the Garden of Eden. God says that one day He would come into a fallen world as the ‘Seed’ and allow Himself to be nailed to a cross as a sacrifice in order to save the world from its sin. We know from the Apostle Paul that the Seed referenced in Galatians 3:16 is Jesus Christ. The cross of Christ, prophesied 6,000 years ago became the defining moment in history that time itself was divided into two parts: The Cross truly was the place of Christ’s victory and Satan’s defeat.

Jeremiah Predicts that Israel’s Captivity into Babylon Would Last 70 Years, and it Did

In the Old Testament days, after the time of David and Solomon, the ancient nation of Israel fell into decline and turned away from God. Because of this, the Lord sent various prophets, including Jeremiah to warn the people of Israel of the consequence of their sin and to pronounce His judgment upon them. The judgment was certain destruction of the nation by the hands of foreign invaders of Israel if they did not turn from its wicked ways. The people of Israel didn’t listen to the prophets and continued to disobey, so God sent Babylon to invade and destroy the nation (Jeremiah 5:19, 7:22-34). The story of Israel’s captivity into Babylon and their return from this captivity fills the majority of the Old Testament. One of the most interesting prophecies was given by the prophet Jeremiah the year Israel was taken captive by Babylon. In this prophecy, Jeremiah predicted that the captivity would last 70 years, after which the Israelites would return to the city of Jerusalem. If you look at the timeline of events and convert from the Jewish calendar to the Christian calendar, you end up with almost exactly 69 years of time. The prophecy of the 70 years of captivity was fulfilled exactly as predicted.

There Will Be a Seal for the Followers of Antichrist and the False Prophet

Revelation 13:15-18 is the main passage in the Bible that mentions the mark of the beast: “The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.” The mark acts as a seal for the followers of Antichrist and the false prophet, who is the spokesperson of the Antichrist. The false prophet (the second beast) is the one who causes people to take this mark. This mark is placed in the hand or forehead and is not simply a card someone carries. The recent breakthroughs in medical implant chip and RFID technologies have increased interest in the mark of the beast referenced in chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation. It is important to realize that a medical implant chip isn’t the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast will be something only given to those who worship the Antichrist.

Jesus Spoke of a Day of Unequaled Destruction and Suffering

Scripture tells us there would come a time of unequaled suffering. Jesus says, “For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short” (Matthew 24:21-22). Many people believe that this has already happened, is happening or that it will happen in the future. Widespread disease and famine, terrorism and nuclear war are involved in these claims. While this prophecy appears to be dark, you shouldn’t over look the Good News contained in it. No matter what occurs in this world, no matter how bad things become, God is in control. No matter what happens, we know that those who believe in Jesus are given the gift of salvation and eternal life.

Israel to Be Restored as a Nation, Predicted Thousands of Years before it Happened

The rebirth of Israel as a country in 1948 after 2,000 years of dispersion is a hallmark in Bible prophecy. Many Old Testament prophets foresaw this event and many people are familiar with these prophecies. When Israel became a nation again, it marked the first time since 70 AD that the people of Israel have a nation to call their own. It marked the first time since 605 BC that Israel had its own sovereign nation, which was not under the control of another world power. The importance of this event can’t be overestimated. What makes this prophecy so shocking is the fact that no other nation in history has ever ceased to exist for centuries and then returned as a nation to its former land to regain its place in history – and the Bible predicted this is exactly what would occur, thousands of years before it happened.

Though Many Have Tried to Predict it, No One Will Know the Hour or the Day of Jesus’ Return

When Jesus was asked about His return, He made it clear that no one would know the day or the hour, except for God the Father (Matthew 24:26). Because of this, Jesus told His disciples to be alert and ready. Despite His answer, countless people throughout history have falsely claimed that they knew the timing of Jesus’ return, only to be proven wrong. Some of these people have been very influential figures who have misled many people with their false predictions. While we can’t know when the second coming of Jesus will happen, we can be ready.
