Beliefnet columnist Frederica Mathewes-Green first corresponded with Howard Finster in 1987 after seeing his work. In 1990, she wrote to him about her work with a prolife organization, and he sent her the art above. The angel is dated Sept 10, 1990 and is numbered 16,151 (16,000 . 151).

Finster also sent a handwritten letter just before he sent the angel. It reads:

Sept 9, 1990

Dear Frederica,

Thank you so much for your nice letters, Friends and fans give me courage to keep working. I regret not being able to meet all the visitors like i used to, There comes a time when we all must slow down, I will soon be 74 years old. If i am still around Dec. 2nd. I enjoy working for God. And meeting people.

My prayers are for you in your work. Glad to see people take a stand for what is right.

I will try to make a special angel for you in your work.
