We humans have very limited views of the world and our lives. We often misinterpret events as they take place, and there’s no way we could possibly see what the future holds.
God, however, is all-knowing and all-present. He has a complete, accurate view of the universe and knows what lies ahead. We can’t fully understand His plans due to our limited perspective, but we don’t need to. We don't need to understand His timing to trust and obey Him. That isn’t always easy, but you can keep the following points in mind the next time you struggle with faith in uncertainty.
Faith Doesn’t Require Full Clarity
When you don’t understand God’s plan for you, think about the biblical figures who managed to obey God even when they didn’t know what would happen to them.
Noah undertook tremendous tasks because God instructed him to build an ark and gather pairs of every living creature. Even though “Noah was a righteous man,” it’s easy to imagine him wondering whether following God would ultimately save the world from an oncoming flood. Regardless of any doubts, “according to all that God commanded him, so he did” (Genesis 6:9-22).
Mary is another example of someone in the Bible who knew how to trust God even when the future seemed uncertain. It must have been unbelievably difficult for a virgin in the first century to admit that she was pregnant.
Joseph must have also shown exceptional courage and faith, given that “he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son” (Matthew 1:25). In fact, Joseph considered divorcing Mary quietly because he wanted to follow the law without disgracing her in public. When an angel came to him in a dream and said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit,” Joseph set his concerns aside and did as he was told (Matthew 1:20).
How can you take comfort from Noah and Mary? Start by remembering that God knows more than you and that He sees everything. You don’t need to fully understand your path to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Learning to Listen and Trust Daily
While you can take inspiration from people like Noah and Mary, it’s probably unrealistic to think that you’ll trust God’s plan as well as these historical figures. Walking by faith is often easy when you feel confident. It’s much more difficult when you don’t understand God’s plan.
How will you stay devoted when the world seems against you?
God has made several practical tools available for spiritual growth and guidance.
Pray For Guidance and Faith: If you don’t already practice daily prayer, now is a great time to start. Prayer allows you to communicate directly with God. It also creates opportunities for you to hear God’s answers more clearly.
Maybe God has sent you plenty of signs that you’re on the right path. You just didn’t hear Him because you haven’t set aside time to listen.
Ideally, believers should pray for guidance throughout the day. If you’re new to prayer, though, you can start with five minutes in the morning. Then, start looking for more opportunities throughout your day. You’ll find many times when you want help from God.
Turn to Scripture: No matter what challenge you face today, someone in the Bible has overcome something similar or far more difficult. The Bible is more than a collection of stories about God and His people. You can use it as an instruction manual for life.
Before you sit down to read your Bible, think about the trouble in your heart. Through frequent reading, you’ll start to see a picture that helps you make sense of your place in the world.
Lean on Your Community: You’re never alone because you can always turn to God for help. You can also lean on your community when you need support.
Attending church is a great way to connect with like-minded people who face similar challenges. The fellowship you get from the right congregation can also make you feel loved, welcomed, and deeply connected to meaningful projects.
If you don’t belong to a church, explore your area for one that fits your personality and preferences. Over time, you’ll form relationships that can transform your life.
God’s Timing and Purpose Are Always Good
God always has perfect timing. It might not seem that way now, but it will in hindsight. If you ever doubt God’s timing or purpose, remember what Scripture says:
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
God walks beside you every step of the way, whether or not you feel His presence. If you struggle to obey God when you don’t know His plan, talk to Him and ask for guidance. You might ask God to tell you one step of obedience you can take today.
