Is Your Household Part of Gods Kingdom: 5 Questions to Ask

God’s kingdom doesn’t just encompass the big church down the street. It’s as small as our own households and as tiny as our own daily lives. Sometimes we forget the mustard seeds at home, and although the crosses on our wall or the signs in our house from Hobby Lobby might say it, we might lose track of where our household is. However, if we work together in our households, we can be part of the growth of God’s kingdom.

In marriage, we can help our spouse stay rooted in God’s word. In our homes, we can nurture our families with love. In our communities, we can find ways we can devote our time or money to God’s kingdom each day. By prayerfully committing to God’s kingdom in all places big and small, we can build thriving households that honor God.

So how do we take the steps to build our household and grow our homes into places that are part of God’s kingdom?

Mark 4:30-32 says: And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

What are the “Mustard Seeds” in Your Life that You are Spending Time Each Day Growing?

Every day we spend time doing something more than anything else. We spend time thinking about this thing more than anything else, fretting over this more than anything else. These are the mustard seeds in our lives. What are these things? These are the things we’re tending in our lives. These are the things we’re growing.

For some, it’s about busyness and productivity, for other families, it’s about perfection and new cars. For other families, it’s about sharing and game nights.

We must ask ourselves if these things are worth growing and if they’re mustard seeds worth tending to. If we’re worrying over the way our house looks or the clothes we’re wearing or whether or children eat the most Pinterest-worthy dinners, then we’re missing the point.

How can we Make Our Own Household Grow as Part of God’s Kingdom?

The next step is to figure out how to push your household into motion toward pursing God. If you’ve realigned your mustard seeds, then that’s a start. Begin by tending to those seeds. Love each other deeply. Spend time together as a family. Forgive each other. Laugh more often. Extend grace. God will fill the spaces of your home as you pursue Him.

Pray more. Seek Him more. All growth requires knowledge and to know God is to come to Him more. Come to Him in prayer. As a family and as a household, come to God in prayer and in bible study, and your household will grow in God’s knowledge and truth.

What are Some Ways we can Help Our Churches and Communities Thrive?

Lastly, reach beyond your household and into your neighborhood and community. God has asked us to be the hands and feet of this world. He needs us feeding the poor and hungry and helping others around us. Let’s love others around us and step up when we can.

Look for ways that you can reach out into your community, and pray that when you serve that you and your family can do so with a strong body and gentle heart. It isn’t always easy to serve, but God’s kingdom requires soldiers that serve.

This world is our temporary home, and it’s our job to make it thrive and make it shine for God’s glory. Take that to heart and encourage your family to make an effort to reach out to build the community around you to thrive. In all things, we want God to be glorified in all we do.

Author NT Writer says that “Without God's Spirit, there is nothing we can do that will count for God's kingdom.” No matter what we choose to do with this life, how we choose to make our households, what signs we choose to put over the mantle, it doesn’t become part of God’s kingdom, unless we ask God to be a part of it.

Today, ask God to invade your household so you can be a part of His kingdom and a part of His glory. Ask God to help you sow the right mustard seeds in your household so your family can grow for His glory, and lastly, ask Him for the willingness and the heart to serve others.

God’s kingdom isn’t just gold and glorious. It’s us, too. Families. And spouses. And single moms. And households of messy kitchens and dirty laundry and to-lists.
