Matthew 24:42-44
“Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”
In the last 20 years, there have been several instances of people thinking the end of the world is here. Y2K and June 6, 2006 come to mind. In times when such sensationalism sells, it is important to remember this verse. We will not know when Christ returns until it happens. There may be signs and hints that the Second Coming approaches, but we cannot predict the actual date.
This verse would have been particularly important to the early Church. Many early Christians believed that they would live to see the Second Coming. More than one of Paul’s epistles mentions that Jesus will return soon and that the end of the world as we know it is not far away. Even though they believed the Second Coming was near, they did not believe that they knew the exact time. This is wisdom to remember today when we can predict so many things. Christ will return when we are least expecting it, but our hearts must be ready nonetheless.
