I Am Fair

Is Jesus good? Yes. Is he kind? You betcha. Fair? Not so much. As the toddlers that we are when it comes to all things supernatural, we hedge our bets that our proverbial piece of the pie will be bigger if Jesus is fair. That childish notion is not only wrong, it misses the very power of what Jesus came to Earth to do. Jesus not being fair is the best thing that ever happened to humanity. Grace and mercy, by their very nature are not fair. His unlimited patience and kindness toward you and me is not fair. Jesus isn’t fair, he’s so much more than that – He’s the living image of the Father, who, by the way – isn’t fair either. What’s fair about Calvary? What’s fair about “While we were yet sinners”? Nothing, nothing at all – and for that we can be mighty thankful.

I Am What You Say I Am

Imagine a world where people legitimately believed Disneyland was located at in Tucumcari, NM simply because someone didn’t want to travel all the way to California to see Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the Disney gang. Ludicrous, you say? No more than fashioning Jesus into our own image. Disneyland has a literal address, and you are free to agree or disagree with the accuracy of that address – but that doesn’t change where it is. Jesus is who he is, plain and simple. The more we prayerfully search out the Scriptures and commune with him, the more we’ll know about him. The goal is to get to know, love, and serve Jesus in his fullness, rather than trying to fit him into our tiny box of what we think the Messiah should look like.

I Do Whatever I Want To Do

Oh, how we love our illusions of liberty! It’s powerful to remember that Jesus, the most high son of God himself had limits placed upon his actions. He knew that it was best for him and the kingdom to do what he saw his Father doing. Jesus’ vernacular was whatever he heard the Father saying. That was his default. It was what kept him untarnished from the filth in which he was surrounded. Jesus didn’t just follow whatever fancy he had in his heart. He had to resist the carnal cravings just like every other man and woman that has walked this green globe. Jesus did not do whatever he wanted to do, otherwise he would have been disqualified as our Messiah. And if we are going to be part of the body of Christ, we would do well to double check any thought, word, or deed that doesn’t line up with what our Father says and does. It worked for Jesus, it will work for us.

Build Me A Bigger Church Building

Jesus wants a big and powerful church, but didn’t seem to mention the size of our fellowship halls. Although there have been many cultural twists and turns through the centuries, and church looks very different now than it did in Jesus’ time, his lack of emphasis on the local and organized church is telling. With our modern minds and ambitions, we tend to want to do much for Jesus, and so we think we’ll build him a bigger building, or plan a bigger event. Because of course, bigger must be better. Sadly, that “truth” is only applicable in Texas. Jesus doesn’t want size, he wants fruit. He wants potency. Changed and transformed lives are far more precious to him than a shiny podium. His agenda remains the same, to seek and save the lost. If we’re doing that, then we are a success – even if we don’t have a brand spanking new building or sound system.
