What prayers do you need to be answered today? Perhaps you are exhausted from waiting, and you want an answer now. While no one can rush God or His plans, it is advantageous to learn more about Him and how He answers prayers. God does not always answer prayers with a straightforward, “yes,” sometimes, He answers in an unexpected way. By becoming aware of these unexpected ways, you will be able to grow in Christ, build a strong relationship with Him, and reflect His love to others.
Here are eight unexpected ways God answers prayers.
1. Through a Loved One
God answers prayers in unique ways, one way being through your loved ones. Have you noticed a loved one showing up for you more often lately? Perhaps they came to see while you were recovering from surgery, or they dropped by with extra groceries after your pet passed away. God answers prayers in subtle ways and, often, through the loved ones in your life.
2. Through a “No”
Hearing “no” after you have prayed endlessly is heartbreaking. You may grow angry or bitter towards God. Rather than seeing a “no” as a bad thing, see it as an unexpected way God is answering your prayer. It could be He is protecting you from something. Therefore, when God says “no” to a job, a relationship, or a new move, trust Him (Proverbs 3:5-6). There is a reason God is saying “no.”
In addition to protecting you, it could be He has something better in store for you. As Paul says, “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’— the things God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Trust Him with the process and watch His power unfold in your life.
3. Through a Different Perspective
God also tends to answer prayers by blessing you with a different perspective. Think about your current perspective: is it positive or negative? It could be that God is changing your perspective on a situation, and this, in turn, will be an answer to your prayer. For example, maybe you prayed for God to help you with anxiety. Rather than completely eradicating your anxiety, He is helping you see it in a new way.
4. Through Loss
As painful as it sounds, sometimes your prayers may be answered through loss. Perhaps you would have never come to know the Lord apart from a loved one passing away. It could be that you have already seen God answering your prayers through loss. When you struggle with embracing this truth, turn to the Bible: “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ” (Philippians 3:7).
5. Through Pain
Pain and hardship are often paramount to growth as Christ followers. In your own life, you may have already seen this to be true. God may be answering your prayers in unexpected ways today, including through pain. Through heartbreak, bereavement, and emptiness, God can answer your prayers. In the darkness and void, you finally discover that God is all you truly need. For when you have God, you have everything.
6. Through Growth
God also answers prayers through growth. What this means is that every time you grow in your walk with Jesus, you are seeing your prayers come to fruition. Perhaps a few of your prayers were, “Please help me to draw closer to You, Lord,” “Bring revival into my life,” or “Help me to develop the fruits of the Spirit.” Through steady spiritual growth and maturity, God has been answering your prayers.
7. Through Closed Doors
No one likes a closed door, yet they are often needed to see God’s answer to a particular prayer. For example, maybe you just experienced a break-up. You really thought they were the one, yet they ended things with you. Rather than growing angry with God, remind yourself that this could be an answer to your prayer. Have you been praying, “Dear Lord, please help me to know if this is the one you want for me”?
If you have, it could be God closing this door, indicating He doesn't want you to be in this relationship. The same reigns true if the door has been closed to a friendship, your dream job, or a trip you were anticipating. Challenge yourself to trust God with this closed door and push forward to the future He has for you (Jeremiah 29:11).
8. Through Unexpected People
Lastly, it should be noted that God can answer prayers through unexpected people. This could be complete strangers or friends of friends. Perhaps a friend of a friend connected you with your dream mission trip or the smile of a stranger helped you feel better after a stressful day. Look at all the wonderful ways God can answer your prayers!
God often answers prayers in unexpected ways. While these ways are unique, they help you to fully embrace the answer God is giving you. A few ways God unexpectedly answers your prayers include through a loved one, a “no,” a different perspective, loss, pain, growth, closed doors, and unexpected people.
