7 Big Lies Christians Believe

You’ve been a Christian your whole life. Went to Sunday school, attended a Christian school, or maybe even went on mission trips. You probably think you have it all figured out about what being a Christian is.

However along the way, you probably picked up some of these strange ideals that became part of your core beliefs. Some of these might have been taught explicitly by a church member to you, or was taught though the lack of their action. These lies have somehow slithered into your mind, and God wants you to set them free. Some of these so-called Christian beliefs are just misguided thoughts from society rather than from the Bible.

The Word of God is very clear on what being a Christian means. These lies are completely contradicted in the Bible and you will quickly learn they have no real merit in the Christian faith.

“You shouldn’t tell God your struggles or doubts.”

As a Christian you may have been led to believe that you shouldn’t worry God with your struggles in life. God has a whole universe to run, so He doesn’t have time to deal with your small problem. This isn’t true at all. God knows that living the Christian life can be hard at times, and there isn’t always a clear answer or explanation to your problems. God wants to help you through your struggles and doubts. Being honest and open about the trials you are facing doesn’t make you less religious, instead it actually brings you closer to God because it forces you to get rid of your pride. You don’t overcome the difficulties of life by ignoring the struggle; you overcome them by inviting God to work in those areas (Psalm 43:5).

“Church leadership is only for the super-holy.”

Pastors, missionaries and other church leadership are reserved for only the most holy of souls. The top 1 percent of the church body that are actually seriously in love with Christ, and are being called to do bigger and better things. This is a very ingrained way of thinking, that there are some that are more holy than others. Scripture, however, paints a very different picture. Everyone is just as anointed as the person next to them and we all are being called on by God. No matter if you are a pastor, housewife, teacher, nurse or janitor God has something great planned for your future. No matter where you start out in life, you can be a part of church leadership if you feel that’s where God is asking you to take your talents.

“The Bible is only a rule book.”

Some people find reading the Bible a tedious task, and just cherry pick out the lessons from inside. They focus on only the big 10 rules, and don’t think it’s worth anything more than that. People on the outside of Christianity might only see it as a rule book as well, and assume it has no other real merit. When we think like this, we don’t have any real deep connection to the holy text. The Bible is more than a rule book, it’s all about Jesus. It was designed to help flourish our relationship with Jesus and teach us about Him. The goal should not be to get to the next chapter to learn all the things you can’t do. The goal should be discovering Jesus and accepting Him into your heart.

“God believes money is pure evil.”

For whatever reason, people have decided that money is pure evil and that having a desire to want any wealth goes directly against God’s wishes. But here’s the deal. While Jesus talked about money often, it’s important to note that He never said that it was bad. In fact, scripture promises for financial blessings numerous times for Christians. Jesus never had a problem with money, but rather people’s desire for money over everything else. In the end, it’s OK to have money and to want it as long as it doesn’t make us lose sight of what’s really important. We have to keep our focus on God, and make money a lesser priority.
