Every day, we are faced with choices about what to believe, who to trust and which path to take. With so many voices competing for our attention, knowing what is true and making wise decisions isn’t always easy.

That’s where biblical wisdom and discernment become especially important. Scripture offers guidance for recognizing truth, making difficult choices and navigating uncertainty with confidence. Whether you’re facing a major decision or simply trying to live wisely each day, God’s Word can help point you in the right direction.

Here are seven Bible verses every Christian should know about wisdom and discernment.

1. Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches you to trust in the Lord rather than in yourself. By trusting in Jesus and submitting your ways to Him, He will make your path straight. This is the way to wisdom and discernment; apart from Jesus, no one can possess these qualities. Talk with the Lord about cultivating wisdom and discernment, and He will answer your prayers.

2. James 1:5-8

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do” (James 1:5-8).

Anytime you feel like you are lacking wisdom, rest in the promise that you can turn to God. He generously gives wisdom to all who ask. However, when you ask, be sure to remain steadfast. If you doubt that God can bless you with wisdom, you will be blown and tossed by the sea of life. Stay focused on the Lord, and allow His wisdom and discernment to fill your heart.

3. 1 John 4:1

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

Wise and discerning individuals do not trust everything they see or read. Instead, since they are mature, they can distinguish good from bad. 1 John 4:1 encourages you to test the spirits to see if they are from God. You shouldn't only be testing spirits but also other aspects of your life, such as major life decisions.

Never leave God out of a major decision. He wants to be a part of your daily life. Talk with Him in prayer and listen to Him through His Word. By doing this, you will grow in wisdom and discernment.

4. Matthew 7:24-27

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matthew 7:24-27).

Jesus teaches you what it means to be wise. A wise person listens to the words of Jesus and puts them into action. If you are struggling to apply the words of the Lord into your life, challenge yourself to apply them one at a time. In this way, you will slowly be building upon your house. When the storm beats against your house, it will stand.

5. Proverbs 1:1-7

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:1-7).

The Book of Proverbs is known as the “Sayings of the Wise.” To obtain true biblical wisdom and discernment, you need to consult and study this book of the Bible daily. Proverbs will help you gain understanding in all areas of life. True wisdom and discernment will manifest in your life once you allow God to plant the words of the Bible into your heart.

6. Hebrews 5:14

“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:14).

Distinguishing good from evil cannot happen overnight; it is only for the spiritually mature. How can one be spiritually mature apart from having wisdom and discernment? Only by studying the Word and walking closely with God can you become wise and discerning. Walk closely with Him, go to Him in prayer, and actively seek out ways you can glorify Him in your life.

7. Philippians 1:9-11

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11).

Paul wants you to grow in your knowledge of the Lord. In this way, you will be able to cultivate true wisdom and discernment. When you feel like you are struggling in this area, offer up a prayer to God. Tell him exactly how you are feeling. With time, He will help you gain wisdom and discernment.

Wisdom and discernment don’t develop overnight, but Scripture gives us a strong foundation for both. By studying these verses, reflecting on their meaning and applying them to everyday life, you can grow in your faith, make wiser decisions and become better equipped to recognize what is true and what is not.
