Trust in God

We’ve grown dependent on GPS apps to guide us. We type in the address, tweak the settings, and pick the route that promises to get us there fastest while avoiding accidents and construction. We trust that, eventually, the app will get us to our destination safely, even if it takes us down unexpected roads.

But life doesn’t come with a GPS. There’s no way to type in “healing after a loss” or “navigating a layoff” and get turn-by-turn directions on what to do next to move forward.

Thankfully, we worship a God who knows every road, sees every obstacle, and promises to guide us forward, even when we can’t see the entire route. Scripture shows us this again and again: Abraham left his homeland without knowing the destination. Moses led the Israelites for 40 years in the desert. Mary said yes without understanding the details. God rarely shows the full path before asking us to take the first step.

These five Bible verses remind you that when you can’t see the way forward, God can. And you can find strength in uncertainty by trusting Him and taking it step by step with Him.

1. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

As a Christian, life can feel like a constant trust fall. You're teetering on the edge of a big decision or heartbreak, unable to see God behind you, yet being asked to let go anyway. And that’s terrifying. Our instinct is to figure things out, analyze every angle, and create backup plans for our backup plans. We want to understand before we trust.

But this verse asks you to trust with all your heart, not just the part that feels confident or in control. Your understanding is limited. God’s is not. When you stop relying on your narrow perspective and lean into His wisdom instead, you create space for Him to lead you (and catch you!).

Make this verse your own: The next time you find yourself overthinking a decision, pause and ask, “Am I trusting my own understanding, or trusting God?” Then let go and take the step, even if it feels like a trust fall. He will catch you every time.

2. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).

Uncertainty can spiral your thoughts straight into worst-case scenarios. When you can’t see what’s ahead, fear will fill in the blanks. Isaiah 41:10 meets fear with four steadying promises: God is with you. He is your God. He will strengthen you. He will support you.

Moving forward feels easier when you know Who is walking with you. The God who created the universe stands beside you, offering His strength when yours runs out, His help when you don’t know what to do, and His steady hand when you feel like you’re falling.

Make this verse your own: When fear creeps in, let His truth speak louder than your worries. Speak this out loud: “God is with me. God is mine. God strengthens me. God supports me.”

3. "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Most of us want to see the plan first. We think we need clarity, confirmation, and proof before we make a move. But faith flips that order: you step first, and the clarity comes later.

Walking by sight says, “I’ll move when I see the path.”
Walking by faith says, “I’ll move because I trust God.”

Faith means choosing to believe that God is at work, whether you can see it or not. And faith means taking the next right step, even in uncertainty, simply because you trust the One leading you.

Make this verse your own: Think of one area in your life right now where you’re waiting to “see” before you act. What would it look like to take a small, faith-filled step instead? Confess to God: “I don’t see it yet, but I’m trusting You enough to move.

4. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Not all things in this world are good. Not by a long shot. You will face hard things, painful things, confusing things, unfair things. But God can redeem even the most devastating and heartbreaking situations.

Consider Joseph. His brothers betrayed him and sold him into slavery. Then, he was wrongly accused and put in jail. Yet years later, he could look back and say, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20). What looked like disaster was actually part of God's plan to save an entire nation. You may not see how God is working right now. But you can trust that He is.

Make this verse your own: Sometimes the best way to find strength in uncertainty is to look back at a difficult season. In hindsight, can you see now how God worked it for good? Let that perspective give you faith in the present uncertainty you're facing, reminding you of His trustworthiness.

5. "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Psalm 23:4).

To reach greener pastures, shepherds often had to guide flocks through deep ravines where predators hid in the shadows, the footing was unsteady, and the path narrowed so tightly the sheep couldn’t see what was ahead. The sheep needed to trust their shepherd wholeheartedly.

As a shepherd (and the author of this Psalm), David knew all that. He knew a shepherd used a rod to strike predators, to check for danger, and to defend the flock. And he knew the staff nudged wayward sheep back onto the safe path, pulled them close, or rescued them when they slipped.

You may not be able to see the way out of your valley, but your Shepherd does. He knows every twist, every drop-off, every shadow. He is defending you from danger you aren’t even aware of and gently leading you step by step toward greener pastures.

Make this verse your own: If you’re walking through a valley season, take a moment to acknowledge God as your Shepherd. Thank Him that His rod protects you from the unseen and His staff guides you when the path feels unclear. Ask Him for the courage to follow Him even though you can’t see the way forward for yourself.

A Closing Word of Hope

Not knowing what's next or how even to move forward can feel scary. But you serve a God who sees the beginning and the end. He holds the future in His hands and promises never to leave you. So when you can’t see the way forward, cling to His promises. Meditate on these verses. And remember this:

You may not be able to plug your situation into a GPS, but God already knows the route, the detours, and the destination. He will lead you every step of the way. And you can take the next step with confidence, knowing He is already preparing the one after that.
