Three separate traditions coexist within Christianity regarding the familial relationship between James and Jesus. Scenario #1 below is accepted by most Protestants; scenario #2 by many Orthodox Christians; and scenario #3 by Roman Catholics. All three denominations accept the doctrine that Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
