From rosaries and cross necklaces to turbans and yarmulkes, visible clothing and other items can identify people of devout faith. But some believers wear religious items under their regular clothes, as a private reminder of their commitments and beliefs. We invite you to take a polite peep at what's going on underneath the surface.

Tallit Katan

Talllit Katan (Jewish)

A small, rectangular, sleeveless garment with fringes on the four corners. Observant Jewish men wear it over their shoulders and under their shirts to fulfill the injunction in Numbers 15:37-41, "they should make themselves tzitzit (fringes) on the corners of their clothing throughout their generations ...give the tzitzit of each corner a thread of blue. ...when you look at them you will remember all of the Lord's commandments and do them." Because modern Jews have no record of the exact shade of blue commanded in ancient times, the fringes are now entirely white.
