"This shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths." What you just read is not fictional, but about real zombies according to Zechariah 14:12. We will be raised from the dead and embrace a new world. Yet, it will different for those who are saved. Before Jesus, there was torment, pain and a life without God for eternity. The zombie story used to be ours before Christ. Jesus offers victory over death and it all started with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God told Adam and Eve that they could eat any fruit from the trees except for the tree of good and evil. We know how the story ends. This was the first human transgression against God. Our zombie friends will never experience this and will never be free from sin, hence the reason they walk with affliction. We are reminded in Psalm 1:6: "For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish." Zombies are perishing, but this is a stark reminder of how our souls used to be. Here are 5 things zombies teach about the Gospel and our faith.

We All Lose Focus

The zombie walk can be something that we all experience in life. We go into autopilot in our position with God and we can lose out faith. In the show "The Walking Dead" the group is surrounded by flesh-eating zombies. All hope seems to be gone, but their faith is rekindled. "We made it. We can make it. We can. We're the ones who live," they said. We can make it as well despite becoming stale in our faith. Perhaps it's time to start reading the Bible and connecting to God again. John 14:21 said, “Whoever really loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and will show Myself to him.” You can be confident that God doesn't want you to wander like a zombie in life.

They Remind Us We Were Sinners

Watching a zombie is like watching a snapshot in time of what we used to be like as a sinner. Ephesians shared: "God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the Heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus." We are now dead to our daily transgressions against ourselves, others and God. We are no longer shackled to the past but have liberty. Jesus took the keys away from satan and while zombies follow him recklessly, we have the acumen to not follow the god of this world. We can now be discharged from damnation and hell. Imagine being a zombie and never finding freedom from sin and death?

They Force Us to Face the Unknown

"Zombies are horrifying not simply because they’re mean and aggressive. They are horrifying because they represent what ought to repulse us: the rotting decay of death," author Russell Moore shared. Many of us are scared to die because there is a fear of death in many of us. People may have a phobia of dying as well called "thanatophobia." Near-death researcher Norman Van Rooy said, “Like the child being born, we have no choice but to yield ourselves to the unknown.” But we don't need to look at death as an unknown. It is human to be scared of the unfamiliar. But we don't have to allow this to imprison us. Jesus offers the peace that exceeds all comprehension and any fear connected with passing doesn't need to be your reality.

They Make Us Face Fear

Deep inside zombies are living in fear. Fear of the future and the pain that they will never find peace. They are under the control of an evil force that controls their movements to eat and to infect others with their maladies. In the human world, we are plagued by anxiety every day. We can ask God to go ahead of us and we can use our spiritual tools to cast the zombies of fear out of our lives. Paul taught “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” We are also encouraged to “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." When we run away from fear in one area of our lives it will appear in another place, just like zombies do.
