Beauty and the Beast

Walt Disney and Mandeville Films are coming together to release, in March 2017, Beauty and the Beast. The cast includes Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline and Emma Thompson. Watson is casted as Belle, Kline as Maurice and Thompson as Ms. Potts. According to Disney, "The beloved tale will be retold for the big screen with a modern live-action lens and the help of transformative CG magic."

Bill Condon, who directed the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls and penned the screenplay for the film adaptation of Chicago, will direct the film. The film will feature original songs from the 1991 film and its subsequent Broadway adaptation that was written by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. Menken and Rice will also write new songs to be featured in the film.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Oscar winner Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Paul Blake will produce a film adaptation of the musical about the early life and career of singer/songwriter Carole King. Sony Pictures and Playtone are the production companies behind the musical. The motion picture company will have the rights to King's songbook as well as those of her collaborators Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.

The press notes state: "Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation."

The Drowsy Chaperone

Geoffrey Rush will reportedly executive produce and star in an adaptation of Lisa Lambert, Bob Martin, Don McKellar and Greg Morrison's musical The Drowsy Chaperone. There are several rumors circulating that Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman, Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway and the legendary Barbra Streisand will join the cast.

In an interview with The Boston Globe Rush Australian director Fred Schepisi said, "I'm going to do a musical called The Drowsy Chaperone. You're led through it by this lonely bugger who can't quite deal with the world, so he escapes into '20s musicals. He listens to them and they come to life for him. We've got George Rush in it, and Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway interested, and possibly Barbra Streisand. We'll see."
