In the United States, it is estimated by the National Alliance on Mental Health that approximately one in five adults, or 46.6 million people, suffer from mental illness in a given year. Furthermore, one in 25 adults will experience a serious mental illness. Mental illness, such as depression and anxiety, do no discriminate based on gender, race, or socioeconomic status. No matter how famous you may be or how much money you may have, there is a chance that you will fight off mental illness at some point in your lifetime.

These celebrities are no strangers to depression and anxiety, and for some it almost cost them their lives. Instead of falling into the trap of mental illness, they chose to rely on their one true creator: God. They found Him when they were at their darkest, and He was able to pull them out of the wreckage. All Christians can turn to God in their time of need. Here are five celebrities that put their faith in Christ to find healing.

Pop star Demi Lovato has made headlines for her mental health issues, many of which relate back to her problems with addiction. She's never shied away from telling her fans about her struggles, and encourages them to get the help they need too. She has been to many different treatment centers, but ultimately gives God credit for her life. "I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well," she wrote in an Instagram post following issues with her sobriety. Lovato "believes in God" and that He has a plan for her that is bigger than depression. "God gave me a voice, not just to sing with. He put me through those things, which seemed horrible at the time, but they were so worth it. With the obstacles I’ve overcome, I can help people,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine.

Oprah Winfrey seems to have it all, but there was a time in her life where she hid "behind a veil" of depression. During this episode, she was confused about if she was really depressed and what the feelings meant. Being a long time Christian and having been raised in the Baptist church, she took some things she learned about gratitude and started applying them to her own circumstances. "That’s when the gratitude practice became really strong for me, because it’s hard to remain sad if you’re focused on what you have instead of what you don’t have," she explained in an interview with ABC News. Showing God our gratitude when we are feeling lost and hopeless can really help us to change our perspective.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar might be incredibly well known in the musical sphere, but what many people don't realize is that he is in a constant battle with depression. When you really analyze his lyrics, you can understand some of what he calls his innermost demons. One way he copes with this pain is by giving it all to God. In an interview with MTV News he said: "It’s out of my control, I have to put in God’s hands. I couldn’t understand that and that can draw a thin line, you know between you having your sanity and you losing it. And this is how artists deteriorate if you don’t catch yourself..." Letting go and letting God is a great way to surrender yourself to God’s plan.
