Grief is one of life’s deepest sorrows, but actor Andrew Garfield sees it as something beautiful. In a touching conversation with Sesame Street’s beloved Elmo, Garfield shared how he has learned to view the pain of losing his mother as a gift, allowing him to cherish her memory and feel closer to her even in her absence.
“You know that sadness, it’s kind of a gift,” Garfield told Elmo. “It’s kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them.”
Instead of focusing solely on the pain, Garfield chooses to embrace the memories that come with grief. He spoke about the warmth of his mother’s hugs and the joy she brought to his family. Reflecting on those special moments helps him feel connected to her, even though she is no longer physically present.
“And it makes me feel closer to her when I miss her, in a strange way,” he said. “So, I’m happy to have all the memories of my mom and the joy she brought me.”
Garfield’s perspective is a powerful reminder that grief, while painful, is evidence of love. His words echo the promise of Revelation 21:4: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”
In loss, we can find comfort in faith, love, and cherished memories—reminders that those we miss are never truly gone.
