Maintaining a life of Christian faith while under the hot spotlight of public scrutiny can be difficult in Hollywood. Tinseltown is full of doubters, naysayers, haters and skeptics who can't understand how an adherence to God is more alluring than the glitz and glamour that fame offers.
Few people have successfully maintained faith in God while maintaining a momentous career. Denzel Washington, Bono, Chris Pratt, Chance the Rapper, Stephen Colbert, Viola Davis and Kristin Chenoweth seem to be the exceptions. Unfortunately, there are many more stories of Hollywood casting away the faithful and casting someone else less vocal about the Bible in their stead.
Here are six brave souls, some of whom you know and maybe a couple you don't know, who may have given up superstardom to go deeper into their faith.
Sean Astin

The world knows Sean Astin as "Rudy," "Samwise," or that cute Mikey kid from "The Goonies," but in the past decade, it's difficult to name one of his movies. His colorful past of different spheres of faith has created the man of conviction he is today. His father, John Astin, known for his leading role in "The Addams Family," insisted he was put in a Catholic school, but later in life, he became a Protestant.
With a Catholic mother, a Jewish birth father, an ex-atheist Buddhist stepfather, and a Hindu brother, Sean Astin understands the struggle of faith. In his more mature years, he has taken a stronger stand for Christ despite the lessening opportunities that come his way. Nonetheless, he has accepted roles in faith-based films such as "Do You Believe," "Woodlawn," and "Amazing Love: The Story of Hosea."
Jennifer Garner

Remember "Bennifer?" Weren't she and Ben Affleck cute? She did "Alias" and was convincing as the first coming of "Black Widow." Then, she was "Elektra," where she met Ben's "Daredevil." This was followed by marriage, kids, and only doing Capital One commercials. That's when she starred in "Miracles from Heaven," a 2016 film in which she plays a devoted mom who fights to believe in a cure and God for her daughter who can't digest food.
Growing up, Garner frequently went to vacation Bible school but got distant from God once she became a celebrity. Now, she is selective about her roles to fit her priorities in faith and family. Even when the father of her three children relapsed into alcohol, she did what Jesus would have done and was by his side to see him through.
Roma Downey

This is an interesting case of Hollywood turning its back on a Christian because she gained access to Hollywood to become an angel. Downey reached into her devotion as a Catholic youth in the hit TV series "Touched By An Angel," which drew her closer to God than ever before. Her next successful project was as a star and co-producer of the TV miniseries "The Bible."
It was a triumph for mainstream television, and Downey allowed her faith in Christ to shine and be heard. Yet, don't be sad about projects drying up for her. Downey's husband is Mark Burnett, the producer and mind behind "Survivor," "The Apprentice," "The Voice," and "Shark Tank."
Kirk Cameron

This is the most apparent selection on the list because, following his smash TV series "Growing Pains," Cameron may have been the first to turn his back on Hollywood. While he filled American homes with joy as Mike Seaver, he became a born-again Christian in 1987 and never looked back.
He has been involved with faith-based projects like "Left Behind" and "Saving Christmas," but he evangelizes the world primarily with Ray Comfort on The Way of the Master. Cameron has even been awarded the National Religious Broadcasters' Best Program for two consecutive years.
Chris Tucker

A man whose star was on the rise when he walked into "Def Comedy Jam" in the early 1990s, followed by "Friday," where he played drug dealer "Smokey," and then into superstardom as Det. James Carter in the "Rush Hour" franchise with Jackie Chan. Then, not much has happened since.
The reason is that God got a hold of him and has never let Tucker go. Rapper, actor and producer Ice Cube, aka O'Shea Jackson, shared that Chris Tucker turned down $12M to do another movie in the "Friday" franchise for "religious reasons." He moved back home to Georgia to escape acting, comedy, and the world's temptations.
Marie Osmond

Before Kirk Cameron and his sister Candace Cameron Bure (from "Full House") left Hollywood, there was Marie Osmond. She and her brother Donny are devout followers of Jesus through the Latter- day Saints faith. When they were kids, they had a novelty show, but one day, Hollywood offered Marie the role of a lifetime, "Sandy," in the classic movie "Grease." She turned it down because it didn't align with her values.
Shortly after, her son passed away, and she credits the church for being the sole support to get her through the grief. Although she sings in Vegas with her brother, she no longer craves the limelight because she wants to have "pure vision" for the Lord.
These six celebrities remind us that standing firm in faith often comes at a cost—but it's one they were willing to pay. In a culture that often rewards compromise, they chose conviction, even when it meant fewer roles, less fame, or walking away altogether. Their courage to prioritize Christ over career challenges us to consider what we’re willing to sacrifice for our beliefs. After all, as Jesus said, "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"
