I was reading from Missional Motherhood and thought I would share some of the authors thoughts as well as my own with you….

Have you ever looked at a Bible verse or many Bible verses and thought, “what in the world?” “I can’t do that, I can’t live that no matter how hard I try.”

Set your minds on things that are above not on things that are on earth- Colossians 3:2

At first read, this verse seems utterly out of touch with those of us who have to, you know pay attention to things on earth, like kids, work, activities, bills, and meals to say the least.  How are we to set our minds on high when everything on this earth is pulling at us, needing our attention?

Well, if we only take one Bible verse at a time and give each verse just a quick glance, it does seem impossible and won’t resonate the whole truth. Remember, the Bible transforms but in order for that to happen we need to have a deeper understanding of a passage of scripture in order to understand its context.

Scripture makes us wise for salvation, is God breathed and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. All of this is so we may be complete and equipped. Scripture is good for our souls as it equips us to do The Lord’s work.

There’s a whole grand story behind Paul’s exhortation in Colossians 3:2, and we need to know that story in order to interpret the passage properly. When Paul writes his letters, he is reminding his readers of the big picture- through listing genealogies, historical time periods, or referring to things past or things to come.

See, there are no more sweeter thoughts to entertain than thoughts of Jesus. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died ( and now are a new creation), and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is in your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Now that we know we are hidden in Him and He’s coming back for us, our desires change and we want to fill our minds with Him and His ways.

Our God is so loving and patient with us. He knows what tugs at us and He is beckoning us to think about the bigger picture because this is very temporary. Come to Me all who are weary and burden, and I will give you rest. He is our energizer, our peace keeper, and the care taker of our souls. Sometimes, I will just call out His name when I am at my max and soon my soul settles down and I realize, I can do all things through Him, who strengthens me.
