Update: Not today.Good.
On his second full day in office – January 22, 1993 – President Bill Clinton signed an executive order rescinding the “Mexico City Policy” – along with 4 other orders related to abortions in military hospitals, RU 486 and so on.
I blogged on that several months ago, recalling my conversation with a religious sister the day after these actions, in which the sister expressed her total shock that Bill Clinton would do such a thing.

The word is – this from FoxNews’ Major Garrett – with no named or even unnamed sources referenced, mind you, although the rumors have been there for the past two days – that President Obama is scheduled to repeat history tomorrow by rescinding Mexico City (reinstated by Bush)  – the same date, which of course, is also the anniversary of the Roe and Doe decisions, the date when hundreds of thousands will march peacefully in opposition to abortion.
What is the Mexico City Policy?
Instituted in 1984 by the Reagan administration at a conference in Mexico City, the policy requires that non-governmental foreign aid agencies requesting United States funding must not provide, refer for or promote abortions. (exceptions for rape, incest, and life-threatening conditions). In other words, if a family-planning group provides abortions, they many not receive United States government funding. In other words, your tax dollars are not going to fund abortions of Brazilian, Filipino or Kenyan children.
Naturally, action on this policy has flipped as administrations come and go. In place for Reagan and Bush I, out for Clinton, right back in for Bush II and now, as expected, back in.
We’ll see what happens. Perhaps I’ll have to remove this post tomorrow? One can always…hope.
(Update, 9:40 am…nothing yet. Perhaps not today. Perhaps, we can hope, not at all…)
