Two notes from the Vatican today, via PRF:

The Holy Father Benedict XVI, who has not ceased to follow the tragic events in the Middle East, has requested the Most Excellent CArdinal Roger Etchegaray, emeritus president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, to go to Lebanon as his special ambassador to bring to that tortured nation and to all who suffer in the region an expression of his spiritual nearness and of his concrete solidarity, and to pray for the great goal of peace.

The visit is essentially religious in nature and will include, if possible, a celebration of the Holy Mass by the Cardinal at the Sanctuary of Oure Lay of Lebanon in Harissa on August 15, solemnity of Mary’s Assumption, with the participation of His Beatitude, Cardinal Pierre Nasrallah Sfeir, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites.

With the news of the imminent execution of Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da Silva e Marinus Riwu, condemned to death on charges of having been responsible for violence that occured in Poso, Indonesia, in 2000, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Secretary of State, in the name of the Holy Father Benedict XVI, has requested the Indonesian President, H.E. Susilo Yudhoyono, a gesture of clemency, sennding him the following telegram
