In a couple of weeks, the Vatican will sponsor a conference on the question. Catholic Outsider has the details:

The issue is critical for the future of many investigations related to the human embryo, from the so-called “therapeutic cloning” to the legalization of some types of abortion in Latin America.

Why? Because international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and many others scientifically and legally assume there is an abortion only AFTER the human embryo is implanted in the walls of the uterus. Prior to that, there is not a human person.
Those few hours between conception and implantation are the difference between ethics-based investigation and a Brave New World.

So the Vatican conference is aimed at demonstrating that in vitro fertilization and “embryo reduction,” human cloning and stem cell harvesting from embryos, as well as morning-after pills are immoral also from a scientific point of view.
