It’s Down Syndrome Awareness Month, so I’ve devoted more space than usual to all things Down Syndrome. There’s more to come. First, may I alert you to the premier of Monica and David, a love story about two young people with Down syndrome who get married. It airs on HBO tonight at 8 pm. From the trailer, and various rave reviews, I can only assume it is well worth watching. (Click here to read what I wrote when I first saw the trailer.)

I’d also like to recommend a few articles:
A Hero or Just a Parent? is a post on Motherlode by a mother with a child with special needs. She reflects upon the role other people want to give her: hero, and the role she believes she actually lives: just a mom.
I’m hoping to write more about this story, but for now, “The True Mission of ‘Crisis Pregnancy Centers’” in the NY Times has gotten me thinking more because of the angle taken by the writer than the information contained in the piece itself.
Thanks to my friend Ellen Painter Dollar for her helpful analysis of some of the moral ambiguities surrounding in vitro fertilization: A Nobel Prize for IVF (And the Weirdest Moral Argument I’ve Heard in a Long Time).
And a recent NPR story about an unusual approach to serving adults with disabilities: Finding Support for Children With Disabilities
Also, in case you missed them before, her.meneutics has posted the “Top Ten Posts of the Summer” which includes two articles by yours truly, one by the aforementioned Ellen Painter Dollar, and one by Margot Starbuck, another guest to this blog.
Happy reading and watching!
