Comparing ourselves to others is a dangerous trap.  The kind that seductively draws us in and then chomps down like a venus fly trap.

I’ve compared myself to other people. There are two simple reasons for this:

1.) I want to feel bad for myself.

2.) I want to feel better about myself.

Mostly #2

You know what comparing ourselves is like? That’s kinda like eating ice cream dipped in… toilet water. DON’T stop reading until you let me explain!

I am an imperfect human being comparing myself to other imperfect humans (besides my wife, who is close to perfect).

Some days I look at other people and think, Good grief! He is jacked up! He has way more issues than I do.

This is the equivalent of thinking, His ice cream has been in the toilet WAY longer than mine has. My ice cream is only occasionally dipped. He practically keeps his in there for storage.

When we compare ourselves to others, we hold two screwed up things next to each other and foolishly try to decide which is more valuable. Bad news, even a drop of the nasty toilet water is a drop too much.

Good news, Christ came to make us new. He was the only one who made it with out messing up. So he gives us his scoop, a brand new one. And we can’t compare that because we didn’t earn it, it was a gift.

So next time you are tempted to compare yourself to others, first take a look at what you are about to bite into. You may want to reconsider.
