Today we are having our daughter’s baby dedication, which is a weird name. Think about that: “baby dedication”.

You know the guy who always shows up early to the office and stays late into the night. We call that “work dedication”.

The quarterback who always plays hard and never misses a practice. “Game dedication”.

However, when it comes to my 8 month old’s “baby dedication”, Mikayla has been kind of slacking. Don’t get me wrong, she screams, and poohs, and fusses, but then she whimpers out and falls asleep. What kind of dedication is that?! Donald Trump didn’t make millions taking naps, Mikayla. Brett Favre didn’t make history by laying down on the 50 for a siesta. So I walk over to my sleeping angel and whisper, “That’s weak. Where’s your baby dedication?”

All joking aside, when there is a baby dedication at church I get choked up. But it isn’t really about the baby as much as it is about the family. In reality, it’s the family that is being dedicated. We all know babies that have been dedicated or baptized that grow up and not live for Christ.

Today, when Mikayla is dedicated, what will actually happen is my wife and I will be challenged to be dedicated to the Lord. That we will raise our daughter in a way that pleases God. That we will be a Christ-like example to her.

So today, I’m being “baby dedicated”.

What about you? We are all examples to somebody. Are you baby dedicated? Mikayla is watching me. Who is watching you?
