Gwen Stefani recently appeared on “The Drew Barrymore” show where she spoke about her marriage to Blake Shelton. The former “The Voice” host shared her preference for laid back dates and described a cozy date night in with her husband. “I have the dogs right here; we have two couches … Blake’s on that couch and we’re like ‘Hi!’ I would sit next to him, but he’s gigantic and we don’t fit anywhere,” she shared. She also told Barrymore what makes their marriage work. “Best advice would probably be, make sure you have a third party,” she said. Stefani pointed upward to indicate she was referring to God.
The couple first met in 2014 when Stefani signed up to be a judge on “The Voice.” At the time, both were married to other people, with Stefani having been married to rocker Gavin Rossdale since 2002. The pair had three sons, but by August of 2015, they announced that they were separating. Shelton was married to Miranda Lambert at the time, but the two split in July of 2015. Stefani previously shared that she was “shocked” when Shelton privately shared the news of his divorce to her when her own marriage was falling apart. “I didn’t want anyone to know what was going on with me … I had this huge weight on me and nobody but my parents and obviously everybody involved knew…It was during that time, he came up to my chair … I never saw him look so upset. So then I was like, ‘I gotta talk to you,’” recalled Stefani. She later said it was “unbelievable that God would put us in a position to have each other at that moment, in the same exact moment.”
The pair officially began dating late 2015 after their divorces were finalized. In 2020, Stefani had her previous marriage annulled so that the two could be married by the Catholic church in 2021. The pair has turned their life from focusing on their careers to raising their family together, with Shelton saying he takes his role as a stepparent very seriously, even leaving “The Voice” after 12 years. “If I walked away from my career at this time, the only thing that I run the risk of is having regrets that I’m missing out on some more important things in life,” he told People. “For now, that’s our kids. This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again. Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously,” he said. “The kids see me as a very important person in their life. [When they ask,] ‘Why isn’t Blake here?’ I take that stuff to heart. I’ve made plenty of money, but you can’t buy time back. I don’t want any regrets.”
