Christian worship singer Phil Wickham spent years waiting for a clear sign to marry his girlfriend, Mallory. But after three and a half years of dating on and off, it wasn’t a dramatic message from heaven that changed his mind. It was a simple conversation with a pastor.
In a recent interview with RELEVANT Magazine, the award-winning worship artist opened up about how his Christian upbringing shaped his views on relationships and why fear nearly kept him from marrying the woman he loved.
Growing up, Wickham attended Christian purity conferences that emphasized waiting for God’s direction before pursuing serious relationships. While the message was meant to encourage young believers, he admitted it left him feeling anxious about making the wrong decision.
“They always would just freak me out, though and make me feel really bad about myself,” Wickham recalled.
He remembered speakers telling young people, “The Lord’s gonna tell you. Don’t mess around with girls, you’ll know when you know.”
Wickham took that advice seriously. Even though he loved Mallory, he struggled to move forward because he was waiting for unmistakable confirmation from God.
He admitted he loved her “as a boyfriend,” but he was also scared of commitment.
The singer said he kept hoping for “that kind of handwriting on the wall, you know, in the clouds kind of thing.”
But that extraordinary sign never came.
Instead, a pastor friend helped Wickham see his relationship from a different perspective by asking him several straightforward questions.
“Do you love her? Do you have a better friend than her? Would it hurt your heart not to know what she did today? Would you trust her to be the mother of your kids?”
Those questions changed everything.
The very next day, Wickham bought an engagement ring.
Nearly 18 years later, Phil and Mallory are still married and raising their four children: Penelope, Mabel, Lottie and Henry.
Their marriage has also inspired Wickham’s music. In 2023, he surprised Mallory with a song titled “Just Too Good” for their 15th wedding anniversary.
“This song is unique because it was written for my wife, Mallory,” he shared at the time, adding that he was looking forward to many more years together.
Wickham has also spoken about his hopes for their future, describing a dream of growing old alongside Mallory, surrounded by children and grandchildren who pursue lives of faith, grace and love.
“I would love to live a life where I’m, like, 80 years old next to my 77-year-old wife on the porch in a rocking chair, blown away by all that God allowed us to do,” he previously said.
For Wickham, the experience became a lesson in faith, love and commitment. Sometimes, the clarity someone seeks doesn’t come through an extraordinary sign, but through wise counsel and recognizing the blessings already in front of them.
