Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski is opening up about another heartbreaking chapter in her long fertility journey, revealing that she and her husband, Todd Kapostasy, recently lost their baby during the second trimester of a surrogate pregnancy.
In an emotional Instagram post shared on May 1, the former figure skating champion admitted she struggled with whether to speak publicly about the loss.
“I didn’t think I was ready to share this yet,” Lipinski wrote. “A few months ago, we lost our baby in the second trimester.”

Lipinski, 43, and Kapostasy welcomed their first child, daughter Georgie, via surrogate in 2023 after years of infertility struggles. Since then, the couple has been hoping to grow their family, but the road has been filled with setbacks and heartbreak.
“We’ve been on our second surrogacy journey for two years now,” Lipinski explained. “Our first surrogate, who carried Georgie, wasn’t medically cleared to proceed with our sibling journey. I grieved that ending and we started over.”
The athlete shared that the process included “medical clearance setbacks,” “a failed transfer,” and ultimately the devastating loss of their baby.
“It hasn’t been an easy road,” she admitted.
Lipinski also expressed gratitude for the women who have walked alongside her family through the difficult journey. She called the surrogate who carried their baby “our angel” and said she will “always hold such a special place” in her heart. She also thanked Georgie’s surrogate for continuing to support her “from afar through this second journey.”
“We will forever be connected,” Lipinski wrote.
The loss, she said, has left a lasting emotional impact.
“A second trimester loss was devastating,” she shared. “Something new to add to the long list of heartbreaks we’ve endured on this fertility journey. Another memory that will be hard to erase.”
Lipinski added that the appointment where they learned the heartbreaking news “will be etched in my mind forever,” along with everything that followed afterward.
Her post also became a moment of encouragement and solidarity for others who have faced similar pain.
“My heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth,” she wrote. “You are warriors.”
Over the years, Lipinski has been candid about her fertility struggles. According to PEOPLE, she has endured four D&Cs following miscarriages, six failed IVF transfers, eight egg retrievals, and multiple surgeries after being diagnosed with endometriosis.
Despite the pain, Lipinski has continued to share pieces of her journey publicly, hoping others who are struggling will feel less alone.
She said hearing other women’s stories reminded her “how important it is to open up even when it’s hard.”
Earlier this year, Lipinski spoke hopefully about trying to give Georgie a sibling.
“We are definitely wanting to bring a sibling to Georgie,” she told PEOPLE in 2025. “But that’s a long process and there’s always what ifs with that, but fingers crossed.”
