Congratulations are in order for Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr., who celebrated 20 years of marriage recently.
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress noted the day on Instagram and shared a few photos of the couple. Gellar also joked to Howard Stern, who asked Prinze Jr. more than 20 years ago “if he ‘will marry Sarah Michelle Gellar even though you know that it won’t last?” (Prinze Jr. told Stern it would.)
Stern then bet him that the marriage wouldn’t last 10 years. “You’re gonna hunt me down and go, “Howard, I owe you money,” ‘Stern said at the time. The two actors met while filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1997 and started dating in 2000. In March 2021, the couple told PEOPLE they had been friends for a while before going on a dinner date together. The dynamic of their relationship shifted after that evening.
Gellar said, “We’ve had many dinners before. We were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn’t make it out, and we decided to still go. We were just two people at dinner catching up. We had a long car ride and a long dinner, and things just happened.” Prinze added that he didn’t want to be with anyone else after that night. A year later, the couple got engaged. Prinze continued, “I didn’t go on dates with other girls, nor did I even want to pursue dates with other girls,” he said. “One day, I just knew we were going to get married and that I was going to propose. I didn’t know when or how.”

They married in a ceremony in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2002. The couple coordinated tribute posts on social media Thursday, and both shared romantic photos from their 2002 wedding and more recent ones.
In the vintage-looking image from their wedding shows Prinze kissing the hand of Gellar, who wore a strapless gown accented by a simple bun for the special day. The 45-year-old Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum dropped several photos of Prinze, 46, on her Instagram Story. In one, the actor has his arm around her as she looks up at him lovingly.
Throughout their relationship, the pair have grown closer. Although they keep their family life private, the actors have occasionally given fans a peek at their home life and shared how they’ve managed to stay together for so long.
“Communicate. That’s the key. It’s about being present,” the Crazy Ones alum told Us Magazine in January 2019. “Listening is the most important thing.” The Summer Catch actor told Us that being light with one another is also essential. “We still make each other laugh. And we treat each other with respect,” he said. The couple shares two children together, a 12-year-old daughter Charlotte and a 10-year-old son, Rocky.
If there’s one thing married couples will agree on, it’s the fact that marriage isn’t easy. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have beat the odds and even a $1 million bet. Now the next question is, when will Howard Stern pay up?
