But he’s going to vote for Obama anyway because he doesn’t want to vote for another Republican. Amazing! He knows that Obama will be a terrible president, but he’s voting for him anyway.
I’m in agreement with Geraghty, it’s looking bleak out there for McCain, voters aren’t being analytical in their choice of president, they are being very emotional. From a focus group’s response to a tough issue ad on Obama:

54 year-old white male, voted Kerry ’04, Bush ’00, Dole ’96, hunter, NASCAR fan…hard for Obama said: “I’m gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He’s gonna be a bad president. But I won’t ever vote for another…Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President.”

That’s just insanity and Reagan would be appalled at such an idea. He firmly believed that the government was the problem, not the solution. What the heck is this guy thinking? Doesn’t he see the mess the Democrats have made of Fannie and Freddie, does he really want the government to mess up WalMart? What good would the federal government do taking over a retailer? Does he think they would do a better job finding goods at a cheaper price than WalMart does? If this guy wants a Reagan presidency, he certainly shouldn’t be voting for Obama because he’ll get the opposite.
Here’s another one:

The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. “Well, I don’t know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I’m sick of paying for health insurance at work and that’s why I’m supporting Barack.”

This is the Michelle Obama syndrome, Americans want their government to take care of them, they don’t want to pay for college (have you heard her whining about how much debt they were in after they graduated?) or healthcare, that should be the job of the federal government. But Obama isn’t proposing that the federal government will take over the healthcare industry, he’s just promising to make it more affordable. She’ll still have to pay, she’s not getting a freebie under his plan. He claims we’ll pay less but unless it’s mandated by law (which he’s not proposing), that probably won’t happen. And some of the measures he’s proposing will actually raise expenses not lower them, here’s an example:

Require hospitals to collect and report health care cost and quality data

Whenever you add paperwork, the cost goes up (just ask the doctors who have to deal with the health insurance paperwork). Plus, what the heck will the federal government do with the data? Who will analyze it? Of course, more federal bureaucracy, just what we need.
BTW, when you force companies to offer expensive new benefits, they tend to limit the number of employees they hire. Add on to that the corporate taxes Obama’s proposing and you are looking at a pretty high unemployment rate under an Obama presidency.
And another btw, this proposal could wind up costing tax payers quite a bit:

Lower costs for businesses by covering a portion of the catastrophic health costs they pay in return for lower premiums for employees.

What’s amazing to me is that these people are older than me and have lived through the Carter years. Don’t they remember the double digit inflation (12%)? The high interest rates (20%)? Don’t they remember the high unemployment (7.5%). What we are going through now is nothing compared to that and adding taxes on top of our current economic mess will only lead to recession and job loss. Unless you have a recession proof job, good luck under an Obama presidency.

Of course no one is heeding the lessons of the past because they are tired of the Republicans and want to believe Obama’s message of change. They think the Democrats can’t screw it up anymore than the Republicans have, they don’t realize the Democrats are part of the problem, not the solution. But I take comfort from the past and know that after two years of liberalism, voters will be ready for conservatives again just like they were in 1994. Higher gas prices, high unemployment, recession, getting rolled by foreign governments (such as Russia, China, Iran) as Obama practices appeasement and not meeting the expectation of the voters will be the ultimate cure for Obamamania but unfortunately it will come at a high price.
Update: Geraghty’s a little more optimistic this morning but I’m not convinced, especially after listening to Hewitt’s post debate show. He actually said that he was pessimistic about McCain’s chances! When Hewitt is pessimistic then there really must be trouble!
BTW, he did think that McCain won the debate and that the Joe the Plumber will be the takeaway image of the debate. Obama will tax the successful to give their money to those he deems worthy.
