The Thompson campaign offers this response to a blogger who posits the theory that Thompson is a “spoiler” for McCain:

While we all appreciate the attempts at political punditry from ‘Richelieu,’ to posit that Fred Thompson might be in the covert service of John McCain is laughable. Perhaps ‘Richelieu’ is taking the heritage of his namesake to heart. Regardless, Fred took on Gov. Huckabee last night. Over the past nine months he has heavily criticized Senator McCain’s position on illegal immigration reform and other issues. If ‘Richelieu’ wants to soak up imagined political intrigue, I hear the weather in Mena, Arkansas is great this time of year.

The idea that Thompson is a “stalking horse” is pretty silly, why would he go through all this effort just to get someone else elected? To be vice president? He gave up a potential commentary position with ABC and his gig on “Law and Order” to be number two? And why would McCain want another Senator as his running mate? Wouldn’t it make more sense for the stalking horse to be a governor, someone like Huckabee?
