The other day I was taking a carload of clothes and items to a thrift store called, “Somplace Safe.” My GPS was guiding me, and when I reached my destination Siri chimed, “You have arrived at Someplace Safe.” That was nice to know!

David was being hunted down by powerful people who wanted him dead. He wasn’t king at this point, but God had anointed him for that future role, causing King Saul to hate him vehemently. But David had a place to hide: it was in God Himself. In faith he ran into His very Being and was hidden from his foes. If you are running from trouble, if you are surrounded by danger, if you are under attack, pray this prayer with David, a prayer for victory and of faith while he was still in the midst of heightened distress. In that place of intense pressure,  David prayed earnestly and at the end of His prayer, he found Himself singing and joyful once again. When He established Himself in God’s hand of protection, David knew he had arrived at Someplace Safe.

O God, Rescue me!
Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.
Rescue me,
save me!
They have set an ambush for me.
Fierce enemies are out there waiting, Lord,
though I have not sinned or offended them.
I have done nothing wrong,
yet they prepare to attack me.
Wake up! See what is happening and help me,
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies!

You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me,
for you, O God, are my fortress.
In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me.
He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.

Then the whole world will know
that God reigns…

But as for me, I will sing about your power.
Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love.
For you have been my refuge,
a place of safety when I am in distress.
O my Strength, to you I sing praises,
for you, O God, are my refuge,
the God who shows me unfailing love.

(Psalm 59)
