Creeping quietly into her thoughts was a shameful little idea. Maybe it started at 5:30 a.m. on the Wednesday, when the wind chill index registered 27 below. It was her first trip that morning to start the car and let the defrosters do their work so she wouldn’t have to scrape.

Halfway into her one-hour plus commute to work, she thought it out loud. “If I got hurt on the job, I could collect disability and not have to work there any more.”  And that started a chain reaction of scenarios that could happen to change her life.

Not that Yesnia would do anything questionable to get injured or fired. She’s the kind of person who always does the right thing. But a girl can dream can’t she? So, month after month, year after year, she showed up to work everyday with the right attitude and did a good job for the company.

Until one Friday afternoon, right before Christmas. She was called into the bosses’ office and was told she was being let go. Some mumbling about eliminating her position, changes in the company, yadda, yadda, yadda. And by the way, no severance, have a nice life.

Yesnia went through the typical reactions. Shock, hurt, tears, indignation and finally she came to, really pissed off. But it wasn’t until she sat down in prayer and reflection, that she realized, this was the best thing that could happen. She thanked God for the opportunity to change her life for the better.

Her children insisted on paying her rent until she found something new. She applied for unemployment, which covered her health insurance and a few small living expenses. Without the long drive, her old car was suddenly affordable. Her head was clear, her heart was full and she found energy she never knew she had. She began her new job search. Easy? Heck no. Satisfying? You bet!

God provides the nudge forward when the time is right. Have faith in the Lord to give direction. Have faith in yourself to take it.
