At the age of 91, Jean Nidetch, the founder of Weight Watchers, died today (Wednesday, April 29). Reportedly a compulsive eater, overeater, closet eater, yo-yo dieter, who was addicted to cookies, Jean struggled with her weight until one fateful day in 1961 when she bumped into a neighbor at the supermarket who innocently inquired, “When are you due?”

While that comment may have stung (badly—ouch), it did put the weight loss wheels in motion. It was then that Jean gathered her similarly suffering friends and began hosting weekly meetings at her home. The group met and talked about their issues with weight, dieting and food. Amazingly, Jean went from 214 pounds to 142, and as they say, the rest is her-story! (Source: NYTimes)

Certainly, I owe Jean a debt of gratitude. It was at a Weight Watcher’s meeting some 14 plus years ago that Our Lady of Weight Loss introduced herself to me. And again, the rest is her-story!

So, thank you, Jean Nidetch, for being overweight, for struggling enough to do something about it; for gathering your friends, for conquering the beast, for paving the way for the rest of us to permanently remove those excess pounds!

People…If Jean can lose it, you can lose it!
Sometimes it’s just that simple.
