Because I’m so preoccupied with what happens on November 4th, and then the One City Walk on November 8th (to raise much needed funds for our Integral Activism program), I don’t have time for a massive post.
But needless to say, I am inspired beyond words about how much the American community has awoken (that is the best word for it) around the political process this year. It is truly spellbinding.
Some anecdotal evidence:

-OC Blogger Eva texted me yesterday to let me know her mother and brother were on a four-hour line in Miami to cast a vote in the election
-Early voting numbers, especially in strange places like North Carolina and Georgia, are shattering all precedent.
-I have heard from so many friends who I used to think weren’t even into politics/activism telling me they are in Pennsylvania or Ohio, working hard on the election. A few folks are missing IDP classes to do so! (good excuse, btw) When I hear the names of who is getting so deeply involved, traveling for weeks or months at a time, a lot of times I think “damn, I didn’t even know you were into this!”
-On a more local level, the state campaign I worked on earlier this year, in which young progressive Daniel Squadron beat an entrenched incumbent for NY State Senate, saw a 40% increase in voter turnout over the previous election in the same district

But here’s the question: do you think the enthusiasm in community activism and politics will sustain after the election? Since we might have the first Community Organizer president in US history, I think it might. Since the various habitual patterns that engrain apathy, disconnection, and laziness in the human mind are quite deep and sneaky, I think we might go back to business as usual.
So what happens November 5? Does all the great energy go into building great community organizations like the Interdependence Project? Or do we all go back to sleep with a bag of chips in front of us?
Also, check out my friend MC Yogi’s recent Obama vid. Shout out to interconnectedness!
