What should have been a peaceful December evening filled with the warmth of Christmas celebration turned into a life-altering nightmare for a Georgia woman who had just left a church event when she was brutally attacked in a public park.

Ashley Wasielewski, a 46-year-old Savannah resident, went for a walk through Forsyth Park on December 10 after attending a Christmas program at a nearby church. Instead of ending her evening with quiet reflection, she became the victim of a horrifying chemical attack that left her with severe burns across much of her body.

According to her son, Westley Wasielewski, the corrosive substance burned approximately half of his mother’s body, including her scalp, face, hands, and legs. The chemical was so powerful that it melted a key fob in her pocket. Authorities have not yet identified the attacker, and the motive remains unknown.

“We don’t know who did it,” Westley told the Associated Press. “She doesn’t have any enemies. She is a friend to everyone.”

A friend of the family, Connor Milam, described the terrifying moments leading up to the attack. Ashley sensed someone behind her and turned around, only to have a substance poured onto her. At first, she thought it was water—until the burning began. Her clothing started to disintegrate as she screamed for help, realizing the substance was destroying her skin.

The senselessness of the attack has left friends and community members struggling to understand how such cruelty could be inflicted on someone they describe as deeply kind and selfless. Family friend Karen Oddi said Ashley will permanently lose hair in areas where her head was burned and faces a long road of recovery.

“We should be able to walk the streets and not think that someone is going to pour some corrosive substance—let’s call it acid—on our bodies and maim us and give us a lifelong battle,” Oddi said. She added that Ashley is the last person anyone would expect to be targeted. “She is just an incredible human being who would do anything for anyone.”

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson condemned the attack, calling it “an absolutely horrific incident.” In a public statement, he assured residents that the police department is treating the case with urgency and has increased patrols in city parks. While authorities say there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public, the incident has shaken the community’s sense of safety.

For many Christians, the story is a sobering reminder that even spaces and moments associated with peace, faith, and celebration are not immune to violence. Yet it is also a call to prayer, compassion, and action. Ashley’s friends and family are asking for continued prayers—not only for physical healing but for strength, peace, and justice.

As the investigation continues, believers across the country are lifting Ashley up, trusting that God remains near to the brokenhearted and that light can still shine in even the darkest moments.
